For sure, I would too.. We just need to look at it from Carolina's angle.. Why would they?

If it was Kessel for Semin and #5 do it, do it now..

Realistically, Leafs are not going to hit a home run on a Kessel trade..Clarky, you know this

- PatC80

agreed and there's no way carolina should do this. For every leaf fan who thinks they should, they are in the same boat as us...would we move our 4th overall for a 28 year old one dimensional winger?

A hefty price to pay but being able to get Strome and Hanafin or Marner and Strome would be a great step in the rebuild.
- Santo_44

I see Arizona taking Strome unfortunately

never seen fabbri play. Seen rattie, but it was limited and he's in a deep STL lineup so tough to judge.

Not sure if either is a 'top prospect' but again i have to see them more.

Kinda like Thoeren Fleury, when he was younger.. A "buzzsaw" type player.. small, fast, physical.

How is it "lousy"?
- PatC80

the Leafs need high draft picks and 18-20 year old prospects. Not a late 1st and a 26 year old.

i could see a deal between st. louis and toronto for kessel.

st. louis is strong down the middle and needs some pure scoring on the wings.
toronto needs help everywhere and st. louis has centres and some decent prospects.

I just dont get the logic. We paid alot for kessel so we have to get alot?

Kessel in 3 years let alone 5 will be wretched. Kadri is a 2nd liner at best. Who knows what the 5th pick turns into? I do know it cant get any worse than how we did this year, and the last near decade, most years with kessel and naz. Move on.

But this trade will never happen, i highly doubt phil waves to go to raleigh let alone the canes making the deal.

- clark_griswold

I don't get THIS logic. Kesel is never injured and never gets hit. Why will his body decay within 3 years? And please keep in mind despite the "Fat" jokes, his fitness tests are very good.

St louis has alot of scoring on the wings, just whether or not they keep them:

steen/oshie schwartz/tarapsycho is a very solid top 4 wingers. It's down the middle

they have a log jam:

Backes, lehtera, stasny, berglund

they will be making changes no doubt.

I'm just curious why his body will decay like Mike Richards has. Kessel is an NHL ironman and has almost no miles on him.

He's fat! Out of Shape! One problem is, he had the 3rd best fitness results last fall on the team. The media chose not to report that.

Ouch, low blow.. Hopefully, we never have to hear stories like Theoren's ever again..Hopefully, kids that play hockey don't have to go through what he and Sheldon Keefe had to endure

I don't think his value will be any higher on a poopty team. Now is the time to offload that contract, unless you bring in a high flying C to up his value and pad the stats.

The last 2-3 years will not be money well spent on this contract. His work ethic will catch up to him. All it takes is for an Achilles or ACL\MCL injury and the combination of his work ethic and determination will lead him down an uneventful last few years of his career.

I called it first!

Sad part is Phil COULD be the one of THE best players in the game. If only his work ethic was higher and he played a more responsible two way game.. just a little. Imagine the type of player he COULD be!!!! It's a shame.

thing with kessel is if he isn't scoring, he's completely, utterly useless. He doesn't do anything else, not hit, block shots, PK, back check, take faceoffs etc.

you see ovie in game 2? i think the official count was 9 hits to lead both teams. he also had a few blocked shots etc...as lazy as ovie can be, he can have other facets to his game. he was backchecking like a demon.

phil scores, and if he doesn't score, he sulks. end of story.

Yes. Some misconstrue him slamming his stick on the bench as he cares....really?? I see a little kid that didn't get the puck in the net and he is having a tantrum on the bench, like any normal 6 year old....

Jeez....when you put it that way...it's terrible deal for Toronto .

Kessel for the 5th is fair enough, having to take back Semin? Carolina should be sweetening the deal, not Toronto.

- Jeropotato

Exactly...

People have their evaluations all wrong in their trade proposals!

It should be something like Kessel for #5, Semin and another high end piece (Fleury?) as a result for taking Semin!

That seems more fair to me

Maybe, just maybe, the Leafs are interested in trading down one spot for an additional asset or two from Carolina. Put it this way, if Carolina wants the guy we value at # 3 out of Marner, Strome, and Hanifin, why the (frank) not!!?? It could be a more simplistic trade with no moving players, just assets.... What about Carolina's #5 and their second to move up one spot in the draft? This is all contingent on Francis telling us who he wants....
- PhilMcCracken

It would take a LOT more than a 2nd to move up from #5 to #4. Probably the Canes #1 next year too.

Lets see...marner is a shrimp who is insanely talented offensively. Sound like someone on the leafs...difference is marner plays with heart and a 200 ft game.

Kessels best years are done (or soon will be). Not saying marner will be the next kessel, or be worse/better. But thats the risk you take when u are trading a 28 year old for an 18 year old.

Kadri to me is an afterthought. Could care less.
