No, we are in this position because we lacked high-end talent. So who were these grizzled vets that led the Kings to those cups? How about the Hawks? Sure, they picked up some guys along the way, but everyone does this at the deadline.
- Slump Buster

Carter and Richards had been to the Cup finals before they were in LA. If you want to talk "grizzled vets," see Regehr, Robyn or Mitchell, Willie. Justin Williams has also been there, done that a few times. They didn't expect guys like Toffoli and Pearson to carry the team. They were merely complimentary pieces.

Sharp Hossa Richards Carter all guys that were over 25 to name a few.
- Stripes77

Those guys all won for the first time on their current teams (and they were on their way up). That's the point - you don't need to go out and import over-the-hill vets.

They also had multiple guys that had won before. The Sabres have had very few. The lack of those guys is the reason they're in this position in the first place.
- buffalofan19

U can also add guys like that come deadline time...
but once we are actually ready to compete
We are still a WAYS away

And pay a hell of a lot more for them. Those guys are the ones that teams are always looking to add at the deadline, which drives their price up significantly.

I have not once changed my argument. Sharp is a veteran who would demand more of an honest approach on the ice from an opposing team than Tyler Ennis. No team is worried about Tyler Ennis so that's where having Sharp playing with Eichel shelters him a bit.
- Stripes77

Ennis' speed and production will create more room than Sharp's reputation
He's getting on the downswing of his career
He isn't gonna be the same player at 33 (next year) as he was at 30yrs old & that 70 point season
Ennis is already out producing him on a WAY worse team

Could be guys left over 2 weeks after July 1st. Always seems to be . Team chemistry is what would get us in the same convo as the Avs, Flames. etc. Team is pretty talented but young. Another year could see a overachiever or 4. We have been used too underachievers that past 5 years. No more tank mode , no more vets with worries about being moved. Could do a lot for the team. Not to mention the 11? first rounders on the team. That has to be something.

You need more than one competent winger. That way when Ennis gets hurt you don't have someone like Phil Varone AHL'ing his way to the top line

A lineup of:

Kane Eichel Sharp
Moulson Reinhart Ennis
Foligno Girgensons Gionta

Is more dangerous and helps the rookies more than

Kane Eichel Ennis
Moulson Reinhart Girgensons
Foligno Larsson Gionta.

I'm not saying they need to make some crazy move to bring in a guy like Sharp. I'm just pointing out that guys like him are beneficial on teams. If the price was right for him, I'd do it. But I'm not selling the farm to make it happen either.

I'd like to see how a lot of our young guys turn out, but with how young our center depth it, it's important to get some guys on the wings to help balance that out.

Like I said earlier, I'm really just looking forward to being able to cheer for the team next year.

Screw veterans and leadership
Sabres need to get a new ice crew...take a look at Chicago's Ice Girls!

And they need to paint the Arena Walls a better color, that flat navy blue sucks, too dull and drab.

- IonSabres

They can play at Caz Rink, as long as they start moving in the right direction!

PERFECT EXAMPLE, thanks Goose

Carter & Richards were 27 when LA traded for them
Not 33!

Sharp is too old
Why not go after someone younger NOW?
Then in 2/3 years when we are competing...
Then we trade for a guy or 2 like Sharp at the deadline

The price to get one of those younger guys is going to be A LOT higher, that's why. You do remember what LA gave up to get Richards right? Brayden Schenn, who was expected to be a #1 center at the time. Now, things haven't worked out exactly that way in his career progression, but it was seen as a very risky move for LA to trade a young player with that kind of upside. So, you may be able to find a guy like that, but say goodbye to someone like Girgensons, Reinhart, or Risto. I'm not sure that's in our best interest right now either.

Richards and Carter were center pieces to their cup. It cost the Kings 1st round picks and prospects to get them.

We aren't talking about a player like that. If there were one available that the Sabres could get, that fits, than by all means, but there might not be

Don't vet rentals usually go for a 2nd round pick?
Plus,
How do we know that's all Sharp would cost?

What's this "hell of a lot more" u think we'd have to pay?

But, does Caz or Riverside have skilled Ice Girls? This is critical for long term success

So making a cup appearance gives one some kind of veteran merit badge? Look, nobody is saying that we should ice a team of 20 year olds. I can think of plenty of Sabre teams that had playoff performers everywhere and came up woefully short. The idea that we need to run out and get more guys that have played in the playoffs is absurd. Also, we don't know if any of these guys are actual leaders. For all we know McCormick or Freaking Ellis is a better leader.

This. Also, these guys were considered anything but teachers when they were obtained.
