Seriously dude ? I would be hard pressed to give up a young defenseman who is mobile big and can shoot plus a high second in a deep draft for eberle let alone creaking teddy Purcell (frank) you would need to give us a second to take him.
- blizzzard

My reaction exactly. Purcell was a cap dump this summer, and is now worth a good yound player + a high 2nd?

The most important thing you identified Cordell was that they absolutely cannot afford to strike out on this one. I am so tired of losing potential all stars because we want to make robots. Sheldon Souray should have never been able to walk away from this team. Defenseman have to be able to play the game that made them successful in the first place. I truly believe Gelinas will be a stud in this league and we will regret this for a long time. He's gonna laugh his way to the bank. Merrill is the one who should be traded. He's too small to be an effective stay at home. He's not physical enough. He's another Mark Fayne.

Imagine Gelly in Montreal with Subban....

There was talk this almost happened at the deadline.
And when it comes to a trade it will never be 1 for one. Just saying I have a feeling this will happen.

Are you really going to call in to question this franchise's ability to develop defensman?

Not to mention that immediately after trading Souray the team made 3 finals appearances in 4 years...

I hear ya but our dmen chipped in a lot this year probably more than any Devils team i've seen and it really didn't help with us scoring. Merrill should pan out to be better than a 5-6 dman especially if Stevens stays on as an assistant to help with his development. I can see Gelinas being another Zid, pretty good offensively but not too good in his own end. They're both good players it just depends on what style you favor i guess.
- FAZOOL

That was still mostly on the forwards though. I agree on Merrill, I think he'll end up being a reliable 2nd pairing dman.

Agreed. Based on the past two years, which is a very small sample size, Merrill seems to be a steady Top-4 defenseman who wont be putting up 30-40 points a year, while Gelly i think is a bottom 4 D-Man who thrives on the PP and in open space when he can unleash his shot. Merrill was on pace for about 17 points this year, and Gelly was on pace for about 25 points. Merrill in my opinion, is more replaceable than Gelly. In today's NHL you need scoring on the back end, and if our defense can be like this:
Greene-Lars
Severson-Oduya/Martin
Gelly-
It gives us 3 lines of defense that can move the puck and put it in the back of the net (Lars on pace for 31 points/game ). As long as Gelly plays with a steady, stay at home defenseman, i have no problem with him. So, in my opinion Gelly>Merrill

Gelinas + 2nd for Purcell?

He is a proven top 6 guy who would really increase your offense. Just seems that he ain't finding his grove in Edmonton at the moment. Not to mention we have lots offense right now.

Gelinas would be a great addition for us. Shame that he has been benched way too often.

- EdmHockeyMan

We're giving up Gelinas AND a pick for Purcell?

Puff, puff, pass, bro.

Purcell was on a TB team lightyears ahead of NJ & Edmonton.

Put Purcell on an offensively starved team in NJ and he'll produce about as much as he did in the dumpster fire up north. He can't find his "groove" in Edmonton because groove=unrealistic expectations for a 3rd liner. He's a top 6 in Tampa and maybe a handful of other teams. He's not a mutually exclusive top 6 talent.

No thanks.

Merrill is only 2 years into this league...

Let me show you something

59 2 8 10 22 0 <-- this is the statline of one of the D on our team in his second year. Do you know what his name is?

Andy Greene. Is he a bottom six?

Merrill was a -14... Greene, one year, was a -23.

Put it in the cask and let it age a little bit, you never know what flavour you're going to get.

I don't get the projection of 5/6th dman for Merrill. Merrill is already better than Fayne. Fayne had horrible positioning & was routinely taken advantage of.

Merrill hopefully will most like be a 2nd pairing defenseman. He has an offensive game yet to develop but in NJ it may never really come to fruition.

Must be the same people that had Larsson pegged as a bust because some people in the organization felt he should spend a good amount of time on the bench.

Once they actually just sacked up and let the kid play, all this "bust" talk disappeared quickly.

I'm willing to bet in a year or two talk of Merrill being underwhelming will disappear as well.

You could argue that Gelinas' last year was a "breakout" year... he was nearly .5 ppg player, which is pretty good in his limited minutes on the club, and considering he's a defenseman on a bottom 3 team in offense. Consider that his point pace was the same as Aaron Ekblad's (not comparing the two as Ekblad is better all around, but they still had the same point pace). He dropped off in assists a little this year, but sophomore slumps hit 95% of players in the NHL, so it doesn't shock me.

He's probably top 10 in hardest shot in the league right now... and it's on the mark, too... and shot threats like that make more space for the rest of your guys... NJ was 8th in the league on the PP.

No, I don't think he's worth Jordan Eberle... but he could easily be the main part of a package that could acquire NJ a young forward with top 6 promise. Purcell is a fringe NHL player and Tinordi was a chuckle.
