He does have every right to go. The Flyers cannot stop him. However, they can strongly suggest that he not go.
- jmatchett383

It's a little comical. Your own coach esentially mishandles a player that should have been rested more this season. You fire his goalie coach that by all accounts he had a good relationship with. Stand by while genius head coach all but rips him in the media. Put him behind a sack of poop defense core.

Then cry when he has a chance to represent his country and actually win something. Predictable.

Because all of hockey revolves around the model run league that is the NHL. Minus the predictable lockouts, horrid officiating, etc, etc. Arrogant morons. Mason should have every right to go if he wishes to.

Perhaps Hextall should look at his own coach first and foremost when he talks about resting Mason. Ironic.

- flyer_nutter

I agree, Mason does have the right to go if he wants to. I think the Flyers also have the right to suggest that he doesn't go. They have a substantial investment in the player.

You don't think there is a difference between playing for the team that is paying him, and playing for a team in an off season tournament?

Mason didn't need to be rested during the season, there was no reason why he couldn't play. The goalie coach also wasn't fired.

Adam Graves just skates up to him, grabs him, and unloads. The thing ended up with Stevens and Domi in the Rangers bench.

I agree (except the coach had nothing to do with the defense) with you. But there's a difference between playing for the team that pays your salary and playing in an offseason international tournament for free.

And of course the Flyers don't want him playing. If they had their way, all of their players would live in a bubble with armed guards every second they're not on the ice due to the millions of dollars they have invested in them. That's not specific to the Flyers.

That sign is pathetically laughable.

I guess Rinaldo, Umberger, and Lecavalier are doing things "Our way"

You forgot to include the Mason has said that his relationship with Berube has been great now that it is more direct.

“Chief has been great with me,” Mason said, calling Berube by his nickname. “There been a lot of speculation in papers and everything but Chief and I have never had a problem. I think we have a great relationship.”

Mason said since Reese left, the communication between the two has grown.

“Since Reeser has been gone we have actually had more of an open line of communication just because we have had to,” Mason said. “There has been no goalie coach to relay the messages so Chief and I talk daily as to where I am at just to make sure I am getting what I need in order to get ready for the games.”

The rest of you (frank)ers, and I'm looking at all of you guys that actually have real honest to goodness hockey skills, better toe the (frank)ing line!

The Flyers missed the playoffs in two of the past three seasons, but we can't blame the old GM, new GM or coach, and if we are critical of them at all, apparently, we are ignoring the good they did.

We can blame the players, but not the guys who acquired or coached them. Good to know

- Jsaquella

Hartnell, Timonen, Coburn, Talbot, Briere, Gagne, Bryzgalov, Jagr. These guys are gone. I think you nailed it on the head, it isn't like changes aren't made on the roster. Heck, Carter and Richards are gone, which dramatically changed the team. A guy like Berube has kind of been a constant through all of this.

It's not the flyers only by any means. It's just very ironic after they have handled Mason this season. I'd be happy to have the guy with a realistic chance to win something because God knows he had a rats ass chance at doing so playing behind this group.

Again, not just the flyers though. NHL is very arrogant it's in view of international tournaments.

Maybe the issue was that Reese wasn't properly relaying what Mason wanted to the coach, or from coach to player. Maybe Reese had an agenda and was let go or quit?

The point is, we don't know if or why he was fired.

I can't even begin to say how stupid this sign is. All I can say is, it's a negative sign and the players have to walk by it every day.

It was mutual, duh. He and the Flyers brass all woke up on morning and all decided that it would be best if he and the team parted ways. They had a few drinks, shared some laughs, then shook hands are parted ways, whistling happily.

I don't see how being protective of players that are very imortant to the franchise, that they have spent time developing, and have made multiple investments in, both financially and time wise, could be considered very arrogant. There is a risk in playing hockey. Claude Giroux or any other player, could suffer a major injury such as an ACL in the tournament, and miss half or more of next years NHL season.

I find this sign ridiculous. I would be surprised actually if it was even still on the wall. I'm sure Bill would know.

It definitely formulates a hostile message from team to players. I understand that in order for a team to be successful everyone has to be on the same page, but there are better ways to do it.

What does everyone think a healthy umberger's potential is from here on out? Can he contribute? Or is everyone thinking that he's kind of a worn out, washed up, old man.

I feel this is a shame and the reason is, Berube can't Coach Mason. You need a guy who has an idea of how goaltending works. You need a guy who is that line of communication between the goalie and Coach. So to sit there and say "Yeah, my relationship with the Coach is fine", all the while the guy who improved your game since your rookie year...simply...I don't know...left. I don't think you can spin this into a positive.
