that example will live on forever haha.

im wishing mcdonagh was back in MTL right about now.

It should, because that was one of the worst trades in modern NHL history from the second it was made

Just letting the Rags out of Cap Jail was reason enough for Bob Gainey to be fired

Like most GM press conferences, its a matter of reading between the lines. There's still the possibility that he could trade a current young player for a targeted draftee like he was trying to do for Ekblad last summer.
- kellyblaise7

Exactly, I guess some expected Hextall to lay out the exact blueprint to what he wants to do. So much is unknown, such as who they'll draft, who's available in a trade, who he can trade and for what. Only so much detail he can go into.

If we end up with a better coach by the draft, I won't really care much when it was done. But I feel ya though, I'm a little ansty for something new. Can't wait till Saturday's lottery.

I think he thought he was trading a 2nd line player for a 3rd line player. He was wrong on both accounts.
- PhillySportsGuy

I think he thought that too, but looked at that as a secondary benefit to getting the cap relief and shedding what he thought was a guy who was a bad influence on the team in regards to not taking conditioning seriously. Remember there was a lot of talk of that at the time of the trade?

Turned out RJ was in a lot worse condition (aka damaged goods, and by goods I mean bad)

I've never even thought about the conditioning aspect and his being a bad influence. Cuz I can totally see that lol

I want Berube and Lecavalier gone. Getting rid of Berube isn't catering to VL.
- PLindbergh31

True enough. I wouldn't consider it catering to VL, though. If you can get the guy to waive his NMC it'll be a hell of a lot easier to find a dance partner to take him. Firing Berube is a hell of a lot easier than dumping VL

one thing he made clear: another coach's availability is not related to deciding what happens w/ chief (not that i believe that) so it would be difficult to play it like that. i think he can still do what ever he wants, i'm just a little concerned he doesn't know yet. he said he had a lot of things to go through but he watched the team all year.
- hogweed

What any GM says and what he thinks (or has decided) is usually two totally different things. Unless it's official that Berube gets the can, Hexy won't say anything. just dodging the question which he did today.

He used all the right words.

"Still evaluating"
"Not right now"

So when he does do something he can say things changed or that his evaluation ended.

Right! And same thing can be said for the coach. You could tell he feels a little bad about leaving Chief hanging, but he has to see if there's an absolute upgrade available before making a definitive decision and tipping your hand to others teams etc. Also same elements involved in Vinny situation. He can't really comment on what he doesn't know and it wouldn't benefit him to say he's willing to buy him out because VL and his agent would just wait until they got bought out to go sign anywhere they want.

I agree. And I think his hope is it won't matter much by the time the team is entering their window of contenders.

I really see no way to rid themselves of VL other than a buyout. He's not retiring, they aren't going to be able to trade him.

My only real frustration with Hexy's presser is this:

Time to poop or get off the pot. Either fire Berube or sign him to one a year extension, but make a (frank)ing decision. Leaving him dangling or bringing him back as a lame duck coach is both unfair to Berube and in no way helpful to the team.

Personally, I'd like to see Berube go, I think there are better coaches out there and more who will likely become available soon. But either way, make a damn decision.

For what it matters, Hextall said the Berube decision is a singular matter, and isn't based on who becomes available. As far as Lecavalier, I guess Hextall should come out and say, if we can't trade Vinny, we'll buy him out. Good strategy.

It's April 15th. Another week or so isn't going to matter, and he does not need to sign him to an extension to retain him as coach. That can also wait.

Out of curiosity, who would you like to see the Flyers hire as a replacement for Berube?

I ask, because I'm very much on the fence. I've had enough of Chief, but outside of a handful of guys who I would simply like to see get a chance to coach soon (not necessarily with the Flyers next year though), I can't think of anyone to whom I would immediately be willing to hand the reins.

I know a couple of boys in the AC inlet that could make the problem disappear.

Just sayin....
