I think it was a tweet by some NHL reporter. Was a few months ago so I probably won't find it.... A quick search shows this though:
Gare Joyce @GareJoyceNHL 19 Nov 2013 Toronto, Ontario
1 scout this week: "Crosby was just a bull as jr. McDavid does it with more speed, more like Gretzky with vision & play-making."

Tagalongs are more important than what scouts are saying. |

Its been reported a LOT of places earlier in the season, including our AHL guy(s) who wrote on this site.
More or less he is Crosby's skill and playmaking, but bigger and faster. So with that, a higher ceiling... or ya know, just a solid player. No guarantees in this business, except that Edmonton will suck. |

The Halloween edition oreos with the orange icing make me incredibly uncomfortable. Like when Heinz made purple and green ketchup. |

In an extreme hypothetical/fun offer I was told this was way to much for a "Soon to be has been" Crosby:
Every pick this year except Buffalos first
Reinhart
Zadorov

I still believe this was the year to move aging/putrid contracts. The ability to evaluate that this team was not a contender come January should've prompted such moves. Martin should've been moved along with Erhoff pre TDL when D men were at a premium and were being over-paid for. The comeback is always "team is in it to win now" which is lofty IMO for a complete new regime in year 1. I realize some of this is hindsight but the inability to flip pending FA's has crippled this roster. Moving Nisk/Orpik last year could've returned 1 if not 2 quality depth/prospect forwards/D men. No one foresaw Hoff concussion issues coming but he may never play another game with the Pens. And hasn't played well in this system regardless. Martin is playing safe and avoiding injury at all cost for his next pay day. Riding his time out. To me... where's the problem with giving DP and Dumo bigger role/minutes in January in hopes they elevate come April? All the while improving depth at forward. Which has to be the main concern. Make a chart that shows how balanced scoring = more goals = more W's = happier fans. |

Yeah McDavid or bust...plus future first rounders are likely to be at least mid round picks as the sabres would, in this hypothetical situation, win a lot more hockey games with Sid on their team. |

None of those assets would make an immediate impact for the pens. Coming up with a fair offer for Crosby is nearly impossible. |

NHL ready talent in Reinhart and Zadorov
Refill the farm system with a poop ton of picks.
You could probabyl get more NHL ready talent somewhere else, but it really is up to what the Pens want. |

In my opinion, Rutherford should be on the hot seat before Johnston. Sure, he didn't blow up the future for rentals ala Shero...though the Winnik trade was a bit of an overpayment (I do believe he resigns). However, the release of Arcobello was a mistake and the trading of Despres was a horrible, unnecessary, move.
I guess my feeling is this: he did OK in the off season, but made the team worse as the season went on.

Rutherford left Carolina is pretty bad shape. Don't understand what the hype about him as a GM is. |

Sorry but I feel that trading Malkin/Crosby/Letang is the dumbest idea ever. There is no need to trade those guys. They are all tops in their point production, Crosby is 1, Malkin is 13 with 66 games played, Letang is 5th among D.... trading those guys is dumb. RW hit the nail on the head with
"Pittsburgh consistently overpays for average to below average players. Never do this. Average isn’t that hard to find. Rob Scuderi, Brandon Sutter, Nick Spaling, Craig Adams, and Max Lapierre add up to 10.675M on the cap space. This isn’t a good return for the investment."
That is the problem with the Penguins, those are the depth problems that make this team fall well below of expectations. You guys who mentioned trading Geno for Pac/Galchenyuk... you really think that a lineup of
Perron-Sid-Horn
Pac-Galch-Kunitz
Comeau-Sutter-Winnik
Adams-Spaling-Lapierre/Downie
is better than...
Perron-Sid-Horn
Comeau-Malkin-Kunitz
Winnik-Sutter-Downie
Adams-Spaling-Lapierre
???
If in fact that lineup is "better" it is marginally better. Malkin can and has taken over games, I don't think Galch or Pac can do that when Sid gets shut down. I really like those 2 players, but to trade for them with Malkin? That's just nonsense. The problem lies in the bottom 6, as always. Adams, Spaling, Lapierre, Sutter. Replace them with adequate NHL players and it takes the burden off of 87/71. Scuderi is just awful as usual. These players are what drag the Penguins down, and injuries, which is a fact. And yes, the depth behind the injuries sucks... but trading Geno for Pac/Galch does nothing for depth after injuries. It's essentially replacing one beast's production with 2 solid hockey players. What if Pac or Galch goes down? We all cry about depth again... If the GM and cap management would improve, this team would improve. It has nothing to do with 87/71/58... - j.boyd919
See this is where people consistently miss the boat on a Malkin trade. The deal wouldn't just be Malkin for, say, Patches and Galch but it would be for Patches, Galch, and what, about $3 mill or so in extra cap space. So, with that $, you could go out and acquire $3 mill more and upgrade one other roster spot. |
