Don't care about stats, that's a team stat. Mason's got a better save %, and his GAA is 0.04 worse than Rinne, on a much worse team defensively. That counts more to me than wins.
- Jsaquella

This season isn't even over yet and both Mason and Rinne's stats are really close. Mason has the edge on one stat as you pointed out, as does Rinne in another stat. To speak as if Mason hands down deserves a nomination because Mason has just caught up is silly to me. Close is close.

The fact of the matters is, Mason couldn't buy a win on the road this year regardless of who he plays behind. This fact is no different from being the best Power Play team at home but being garbage on the road. You can't expect to get an award because your incredible from one dimension of the season and not so much elsewhere.
- SuperSchennBros

The reality is that the team in front of Mason is going to keep him from getting serious consideration. It's an individual award, but that's how it works. Just won't get the consideration he deserves because of the win-loss record. We all know, that's not on Mason. I'm just wading in the glee of knowing that the Flyers have a legit #1 stud goalie.

In 15 of Mason's road losses, the Flyers scored 2 or fewer goals. In two of Mason's road losses, he allowed zero goals.

If the team in front of him can't score, the goalie won't win the game.

Also, not saying he should win, saying he deserves to be in the conversation.

I'm not arguing this part.

I'm just saying wins are at least 50% dependent on the team in front of the goalie. It's really hard for me to say that a goalie, with similar stats behind a good team, that has more wins is more deserving.

Put Mason behind the Predators, with that defense, and maybe his numbers dwarf Rinne's. Putting up numbers that are right there or better than Rinne's, behind this team, is more impressive to me than Rinne's stellar numbers behind Weber, Josi and the rest of that stellar defense.

"I think defensive statistics are the most unpredictable stats there are," says Charley Kerfeld, a former big league reliever who now serves as a special assistant to Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr.

"And since I've been here, we don't have an in-house stats guy and I kind of feel we never will. We're not a statistics-driven organization by any means.

"I'm not against statistics. Everybody has their own way of doing things. But the Phillies believe in what our scouts see and what our eyes tell us and what our people tell us."

- PhillySportsGuy

How could a baseball organization not be involved in statistics. The game is completely stat driven and so individual based. Hey. The Phillies get a 10 year pass from me. It's clear though they are mired in another decade or two of muck

Well, maybe Mason will get a nomination.

I would say my number one issue aside from the league is the club itself. The Flyers are their own worst enemy. Giroux, Mason, Voracek and Simmonds are stars in this league. At the same time due to the excitement of our new GM and the direction he's choosing to take, what Giroux, Mason, Voracek and Simmonds can do takes a back seat. From the sounds of it, we're choosing to take a step back for a number of years, which means by the time we decide to contend in 2 or 3 years, these players will be like 29 or 30 years old. To me, this is a gamble.

I think the Blues are getting ousted in the first round again. Especially if they draw the Hawks. Bye bye hitch

I think Hextall's own timeline is a lot shorter than 2-3 years. He wants to win now, but realizes that contention isn't likely to be an immediate occurrence. Outside of really damaging the future, there's not an easy way to become an instant contender.

The short term of it is, the team will have ups and downs. But if they can make a long term contender out of it, that's far better than scraping the future just to make some sort of half-assed run now. Conversely, I'm sure if a great deal falls into his lap that shortens the time frame without really killing the future, he'll jump

They played it safe and locked up vinny. Not working out too good. Hextalls vision is the only way to go for their situation IMO

Really not sold on Elliott and Allen in goal. They have a lot of good players, and a good coach, but the West has a lot of good teams and it's going to be a dogfight in the early rounds

If he's let go, he'd be at or near the top of my list as a possible coach. Behind Babcock and Tippett, but ahead of guys like Bylsma and Boucher

seems unlikely but then you see that it seems to be working out with a guy like Therrien in his second go round with MTL

I just think Hitch is a good coach and capable of making the team better. That 2006-07 team was a disaster.

I'd have him in the Hitchcock section. Still prefer Tippett or Babcock
