Hope they enjoy picking 1st overall next summer. At least Reading has some nice prospects to watch.

"I think defensive statistics are the most unpredictable stats there are," says Charley Kerfeld, a former big league reliever who now serves as a special assistant to Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr.

"And since I've been here, we don't have an in-house stats guy and I kind of feel we never will. We're not a statistics-driven organization by any means.

"I'm not against statistics. Everybody has their own way of doing things. But the Phillies believe in what our scouts see and what our eyes tell us and what our people tell us."

Far too often in today's sports media world, there's a tendency to go the Skip Bayless/Don Cherry route, where you hire a blowhard who will simply shout an opinion loudly enough and not give an inch.

NBC has at least two on their hockey desk in Milbury and Jeremy Roenick. Milbury's idiotic management of the Isles aside, he's a guy that not only assaulted a man with a shoe as a player, but also assaulted a kid while working for NBC.

It's funny how often these "experts" turn out to be wrong. Both milbury and JR on Mason, and Roenick on Patrick Marleau, Johnny Boychuk and recently Minnesota coach Mike Yeo, whom Roenick called for to be fired on air.

I went from being a huge JR fan to quickly hitting the mute button when I see his face on my TV

Couldn't disagree more.

Bill is taking on the schoolyard bully, in a sense.

- Jsaquella

Really? I disagree. Who is he bullying? He's giving an opinion.

He's been critical in the past of others, and made a reasoned and fact filled statement that shows that not only is Milbury's analysis completely wrong, the man has a long history of being incredibly incompetent at his job, whether it's as a national hockey analyst for a major network or the GM or head coach of a NHL team.

Bill seems to find it distasteful that this incompetent idiot has a national platform and uses it to shred a guy who has busted his ass to resurrect his NHL career and who has dealt with a lot of difficulty this season in a very professional manner, while putting up a fantastic individual performance.

I applaud Bill for this blog. I thinks it's a great job of showing that Milbury is little more than an ignorant jackass with a loud voice and a bully pulpit to abuse.

Again, it's a down in the mud blog that surprises me because it is very uncharacteristic.

I think Milbury just shoot off his mouth. We all do it. I do it as many know.

Do I believe Mason should be in line for the Vezina this year? Nope! Wouldn't matter, it pretty much belongs to Cary Price this season. So it's a moot argument to me.

Do I believe Mason is taking steps in the right direction to be considered for the Vezina! ABSOLUTELY!!! NO DOUBT IN MY MIND!!

I'm with you. He shouldn't win it.

But he should ABSOLUTELY be in consideration for it. If the Flyers were a playoff team, I really think he would win it.

He's giving the opinion from the bully pulpit, basically trashing a guy who's worked his ass off to resurrect his career from the ashes. It's a common theme among the idiots at NBC, too.

It ignores the good that Mason has done, and turns any negative, even if it's not a real negative, into the whole story. It's Baylessism, pure and simple. Bully journalism.

I think Price wins, but Mason is definitely deserving of being a finalist. I think he's more deserving than Rinne.

There is no way. Cary Price is likely to Win the Hart Trophy as the MVP of the league, which all but means he'll win the Vezina. Mason in my opinion has only had a really strong second half and the injures really hurt his chances of making noise within the league this season.

It is uncharacteristic, but it obviously touched a nerve. I personally don't think the blow hard should be given that much attention, but sometimes we all need to get something off our chest from time to time.

Mason has been really good after the first month, and flat out outstanding since January. IMO, he should be a finalist (Top 3 in voting). He's got better numbers than everyone but Price and Dubnyk, and plays behind a far worse defense than either of them. In terms of injuries, Rinne missed time with injuries, as well.

That said, Price is a pretty clear cut winner. As good as Dubnyk, Mason, Rinne and Schneider have been, not to mention several others, Price has been otherworldly

See, I don't know. Rinne's stats seem to hold up, he has the wins and he's played 13 more games then Mason.

The fact of the matters is, Mason couldn't buy a win on the road this year regardless of who he plays behind. This fact is no different from being the best Power Play team at home but being garbage on the road. You can't expect to get an award because your incredible from one dimension of the season and not so much elsewhere.

Don't care about wins, that's a team stat. Mason's got a better save %, and his GAA is 0.04 worse than Rinne, on a much worse team defensively. That counts more to me than wins.

In 15 of Mason's road losses, the Flyers scored 2 or fewer goals. In two of Mason's road losses, he allowed zero goals.

If the team in front of him can't score, the goalie won't win the game.

Also, not saying he should win, saying he deserves to be in the conversation.
