Had a reach, too. And if you ever meet him in person, you'll be astonished by the size of his hands. Dude could land a bomb from time to time.
Edit: John Kordic may have the record for most NHL fights lost. Also, the build-up to this fight was funny. It was when Dan Kordic (his brother) was a Flyers rookie. The whole stoppage prior, Dan and John were having words, and then Brown came over and shoved Kordic ("as we've been able to predict since the stoppage of play.")
Second most NHL games played prior to winning a Stanley Cup. Only Ray Bourque played more.
The only possible reason I can think of is that he only ever scored 50 goals once, and he was never a big assist man. He just had a ton of 30+ goal seasons early on but never scored 30 past the 94/95 season. Still, that many goals for that many seasons is a feat few can match. - jmatchett383
He also didn't make a bunch of All-Star games (he only played in 2) and never played for the Rangers (*cough*Gartner*cough*).
I think Andreychuk belongs, myself. I don't think strapping it up for that many hockey games should be held against him. The notion of someone being numbers "compiler" being used in the pejorative is wrongheaded.

I'm not gonna disagree, personally. Just trying to fathom how he's missed the cut.

Yeah, I know, but I always felt like Gartner was borderline, like Blyleven. - johndewar
I never agreed either were borderline. Blyleven 4th most K's in history (at the time, 5th now) 287 wins, 2 rings....it was insane it took so long for him to get in.

Right or wrong, if you don't get team success, you'll get overlooked. I remember that being brought up about Gartner, but there is so much that goes into team success, it's hard to hold one player responsible.

I agree sometimes that is held against them. Partly why Mattingly will never get it, yet Puckett did with almost identical numbers.
Blyleven won 2 , so that always confused the issue.

Blyleven won 2, but you never thought of him as the ace of either World Series team he won with.
He took a bunch of losses on crappy teams during his career....again, you can't pin that on him, but it's hard to wipe the stink off.
I'm not disagreeing, by the way.....I think he belongs in the HoF, if only for this shirt.....I'm just trying to explain why Blyleven might have been perceived that way.

I believe it's a combination of the way he played and who he played with.
edit: (Man, forgot that Torts stripped Vinny of the captaincy back in the day and gave it to Chucky)
Your logic won't work on me. I just never cared for the guy.
I always felt like he disappeared at playoff time.
I remember him from his Capitals days and he was a good one. Hall of Fame mustache in those days, as well. - johndewar
That's fine. I never cared for Andreychuk, his counterpart Hawerchuk, Pierre Turgeon, or Pat Lafontaine (or basically, the 1983 NHL draft class minus Yzerman). Same with guys like Michel Goulet and Peter Bondra. Can't deny what those guys brought though.

A lot of times its a popularity contest, too. Jim Rice didn't have HOF numbers when stacked up against the legends, but for his time he was one of, if not the, most feared hitters of his era. He just played in an ERA where offense was down.
The other issue I have with the HOF is that some guys regard their vote as some divine right. How the Hell are guys like Schmidt and Maddux not unanimous?

Some have said they'll never vote for somebody on their 1st ballot. Which is laughable based on those who are in and what they did during their time playing.

Yep...giving power to sportswriters, is generally a bad idea.
