Who is the last 'generational' player who was a bust? Lindros? Even he was dominant for a good stretch of time.
- Pierceme69

exactly, which leads to the only derailment is injury

I was 10 at the time and between him and Yashin I only remember Yashin being a great player. I dont ever hear him as being generational. Ifhes Generational then that makes Reinhardt as well which is far from the truth.

No offense, but scouting has taken on an entire different entity since then. That was almost 25 years ago.

To compare anything to Daigle is wildly inaccurate.

Also the same thing is said every year. "What if player X is a bust?"

to your point, I went strictly skaters in the blog, but in net there's ullmark, who's headed to north America next year, and Peterson in the pipeline...I wouldn't discount Makarov either...not to mention lindback, Hackett and neuvirth all somehow rose above the mess that was in front of them
- Michael Pachla

True, was more spreaking on how would McDavid not be generational is outside of his control. Seems like the general speak is whoeer gets him will win cups so the only way to tarnish his career would eb not winning one.

Good blog Michael.

And that is all that I will say.

Hat what do you think about Nolan possibly starting hackkett?

Seems tank worthy to me.

there was a ton of hype leading up to that draft, from what I can recall...he had 137 points in 53 games his draft year...that's pretty good stuff...

perhaps we can get a sens fan to chime in on that

Was Daigle considered a generational talent? Being number 1 overall doesn't mean you're one of the best players of your generation.

To be a bust one of these things need to happen.

1) Injury that threatens career
2) Ego that overtakes talent
3) Developed by Edmonton or Edmonton like system.

Three is probably the worst thing to happen to a young career, but I suppose number 1 could be just as bad...

- nords21

Which first overall that we picked has busted?

1) Taylor hall, who has shown to be an elite scorer?

2) Nuge who, granted has a 12 year olds body, but is in around top 20 in scoring for centres while facing tough competition?

3) Yakupov who once Eakins has left and began playing with a vet centre, is scoring at a 60 point pace for a quarter of the season? Any time he's had a vet centre and not Eakins as his coach, he is around 60 points pace over the 70 games without Eakins.

We cant expect to have Lindback play every single game. If we were a playoff team wouldnt we be playing our backup vs the yotes? If Hackett played all the rest than maybe that would be true

he or eichel will be in a good situation in buffalo simply because of the foundation that's already in place...

there are a lot of factors that come into play when winning a championship...building a team that consistently wins is a great start, having a superstar increases the chances...imo

All that translates to years in last place. So overall as an organization the oilers are a bust!

I won't argue that, the team isn't built for the West. But that isn't necessarily on 3 players only.

I remember him as being notched a little below Lemieux who's top-four all-time...

but that was 25 year's ago...

I blame the 70's 80's and a half the 90's

Well he did say he was gonna ride linback. Then with three days off playing the only team close to us he coincidentally plays the backup. Hmmm seems legitimate to me

Stepan 99
DiPietro 00
Phillips 96 (he has had a nice career)
Berard 95 (again nice career but the eye injury took it's toll)
Murphy 86 (nice career)
Lawton 83

All I've got Yak can't be in this group yet. I'll leave it up to you on how you wanna judge them as generational or not.

Here could be projected lineup next year and their draft order. Pretty good average draft order considering the two non-drafted players (180 overall is what I put them at). Could be a pretty good team. If they can steal a player like Mike Green (29th overall) could lower that number too.

overall pick
F1 Kane 4
F2 McEichel 2
F3 Moulson 180
F4 Gionta 82
F5 Reinhart 2
F6 Ennis 26
F7 Larsson 56
F8 Girgensons 14
F9 Hodgson 10
F10 McCormick 144
F11 Deslauriers 84
F12 Foligno 104
F13 Grigorenko 12
D1 Bogosian 3
D2 Ristolainen 8
D3 Pysyk 23
D4 Zadorov 16
D5 Gorges 180
D6 Weber 57
D7 McCabe 44
average 52.55

Hackett needs the starts to get the RFA status. Worth more. Why not let him play.

When you get touted as "the next Gretzky" it's fair to say there is a lot of hype around you.

After amassing 137 points in only 53 games during the 1992/93 season with the Victoriaville Tigres of the Quebec Major Junior League, Alexandre Daigle was the can't-miss prospect who was selected #1 overall in the 1993 NHL Draft by the Ottawa Senators. The Senators were even accused of deliberately losing games in order to get the top pick and nab Daigle.
