I expect more next season. Don't have to be a top contender but I want to at least be a more consistent team that has legit shot to battle for a playoff spot right to the end of season
- 3flyerkids

i wanna be at least a tough team, a team that you gotta bring your A-game to beat and dont wanna play in our own building. i think it can be done for next season.

Arizona picks ups two points tonight. That's not good for the chances of Eichel ending up in the West.

Per CBJs: Hartnell's hat trick is the first at Nationwide Arena since March 23, 2012. Who got it? The man he was traded for: R.J. Umberger.

- ob18

was that umberger hat trick against the flyers by any chance? because it sure as hell should have been.

No worries, boss; nobody here is perfect. I forget things all the time that I think I remember clearly

We're all here talking about hockey, not building space shuttles, you know? Nothing has to matter all that much

I don't love toughness that can't play, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't want more size and rambunctiousness on the fourth line and at 3RW

There are nights when I totally think the Flyers are too small and/or play too small

You know, he was a solidly above-average player once

Injured or no, it's fairly sad where he is now

The mileage those guys put on over time...Father Time just remains undefeated, and always will

I think that is a big part of it. They don't play a hard forecheck under Berube the way they did under Lavi. They don't have a ton of skill so I'm not exactly sure why they backed off the forecheck so much.

Maybe Umberger has surgery, has his physical issues taken care of, and can be more effective next year.

I hope so -- that is $4.6 large he's taking up. They have to get something out of that slot

But at his age...Bill Parcells was right. Can't put tread back on the tire

Laviolette plays more of a press forecheck, that is ultra aggressive, and really pressures the puck with 3 forwards and pinching defenseman. The Flyers didn't have the personnel to play that style then, just as they don't now. I personally prefer a less aggressive and more responsible system.

I don't expect him to live up to that cap hit, but if he's with the team next year, hopefully he can contribute in a more positive manner.

I agree that they still don't have the D men to make Lavi's system work but there has to be a happy medium. If not Hexy will have to find a way to get some more skill up front.

Of all the things I might give Chief the stink-eye about, I honestly don't hate the system. I think you can win with it

I just don't think they have the kind of size and aggression that even if they wanted to forecheck with purpose, they couldn't, and that is something that I wish was different

You don't hit just to hit, after the puck's gone, you know? I'd love if they had two more players who had the speed to get to guys who have the puck and the size to separate them from it when they do

I think they need more skill and speed regardless of what system they play, along with upgrading the defense.

Agreed

Feanor's been on the PK structure all season, that's his thing.

I just know they gotta get that fixed, gotta be a little more sturdy on the boards, if they're gonna try to play like they are now

whoah, whoah, whoah, stop the clock.

berube praised emery? or was it nothing more than "hey, tough situation having to go in like that when you're not expected to play?"

- hammarby31

True, praise isn't the right word. Berube defended Emery's play, after criticizing Mason for not fighting through a screen that was foolishly set by his teammate, that prevented Mason from seeing a shot.

Berube didn't criticize the teammate, Nick Schultz, for screening the goalie, which was an idiotic thing to do.

In terms of sheer X's and O's, Berube is fine. His system isn't at fault, as can be seen when the team executes. There's no system in the world that will work if guys can't execute simple, routine plays.

Some days I see what this team could be, with just a few moves, and I get excited

Then some days when I see them pass and puck-handle like they do far too often, it feels like it's gonna be forever

This (frank)ing season has been one of the least enjoyable seasons I can recall
