Did he not also run into Cap issues that forced him to let go (trade) of few players that he probably did not want to?
- D0PPELGANGER

Yes, he left the team in a bad spot in regards to the cap

Mirtle did a piece and mentioned some of it
http://www.theglobeandmai...ruthless/article24132157/

that Krejci deal is trouble also

another reason I like the leafs Management is they have a Cap guy who understand it now. Loiselle might have been the worst

So theoretically we should see the leafs payroll drop and stay near the "floor" if they follow through with the scorched earth plan, for number of years.

not sure, depends on if they leafs have to take back a bad contract to move players, to make the deals work out for the other teams cap.

Being near the floor or the near the cap makes no diff at this point for the leafs.

Well if the plan is to stockpile draft picks over the next couple of years, and develop the prospects picked with these picks, then they need to get as close to the floor as they can, as they'll need the cap space once these prospects come up for contract renewal down the road.

there are no guarantees of success, but the leafs mistakes will be reduced..by a lot Thats easy to see. We have 1 year of Shanny/Dubas/Hunter data to look at

That "year" on the ice was nothing to brag about.

I suspect you're looking at the moves within management and the "scorched earth" plan for the future.

This off season 100%
Bozak
Dion

This off season if possible
Lupul

This off season if the return is good enough
JVR
Bernier

Kessel doesnt have to go now unless you can get a fair return, I dont see the rush with him yet

I don't see the need to move Bernier. To me he's a better goalie than Reimer, who is also a pretty good goalie.

I think Kessel will fetch a good return, and be moved this summer. But I'm with you. If playing under Horachek did any harm to his value, he should be kept another season.

i dont see the market for goalies being to good..so Bernier probably stays, unless he is packaged with a Dion or someone else to sweeten the return (better picks)

It's kind of funny that no matter how many high end prospects one has it certainly isn't some kind of guarantee for success.

The Oilers could win the lottery again. The 29 other owners will go crazy.

The Leafs future looks great. That's all I care about. The Marlies are killing-it right now.

Prospects don't need BIG $$$$ deals until well into their career and taking on dud contracts can be a good way to stockpile picks. Now if they take on a bunch of bad contracts with 6-7 years left that could be a challenge.

They suck. They need a generational talent to give them even a sniff of the playoffs... management just doesn't want to give up on any of the talented forwards in order to get a dman or two or three...

I wouldn't be surprised if they draft another forward this year.
