You must piss blue you're such a homer.

You've been arguing for 6 years that the Leafs are in a better position than the Sens, and you're now just entering a rebuild without having made the playoffs once during a full season in over a decade.

Every Canadian team is miles ahead of the Leafs, except for possibly the Oilers which is why this thread has been created.

- golfingsince

end goal is to win the cup, not make the playoffs.

With that in mind, I don't see how the Nucks or Sens are in a good position at all.

Montreal and Calgary are far and away in the best position amongst Canadian teams... decently young, elite talents on the teams, trending upwards.

Then come the Jets. Also trending upwards, but lacking the big names the other teams have.

Then the Oilers, a team with tons of great young players developing at the NHL level... they're not ready to compete yet, obviously, but when they get their poop together, they'll be great.

Then the Leafs, starting a rebuild, with a new management team that's putting money into every off-ice department that can help them improve the on-ice product.

And then the Sens and Nucks. One team has a cheapskate owner, and really only one enviable player, and the other is due for a rebuild but will try to milk it's core for all it's got over the next few years... both are obviously not in a position to win the cup without a major change to their core... and have shown no signs of wanting to make that change.

You can't win the cup without making the playoffs. The best odds you have of winning are by qualifying year after year.

I'd put the Habs in the best position right now, the Jets moving forward and then the Flames and Sens and Canucks.

The Leafs are starting a rebuild in order to try and make the playoffs first, then try to win the cup.

Any Oilers fan would be thrilled with a playoff appearance. Taylor Hall is in his 5th season, by the end of their 6th Kane and Toews had 2 cups.

A rebuild doesn't guarantee squat.

If you want to take the low-brow approach, then sure, feel free to think the Nucks are in a good position.

1 enviable prospect and a declining NHL roster.

DYNASTY!

...just make sure the cars don't rock back towards you when you try flipping them, k?

I guess Gauthier is still better than Horvat? You'd kill to have either him or McCann in your system, so would Dubas.

Gauthier is poop, can barely score in the Q and hasn't shown any improvement over the last 4 years.

I like Horvat. But the only Nucks prospect I'd really want is Virtanen.

So you don't have any centers but the only prospect you'd want is a winger? Sounds about right.

Nylander is a center, and we're probably going to be drafting another one this draft... so...

Virtanen is the only one that really would stand out in our prospect pool, right behind Nylander... the rest are more of the same, which isn't bad.

Horvat's playing quality minutes in the NHL at 19, moving up the depth chart and gaining more ice time. You have nothing like him in your system.

you do realize that ottawa has the 3rd youngest team in the NHL (the youngest if you don't count phillips and neil, who haven't played in months).

a large majority of the core of the team is under the age of 25, and still developing. they have some solid prospects.....not great, but solid.

is ottawa going to win the cup this year.............i'd say no. that being said, i think if their young guys continue to develop, maybe add a piece or two, there is no reason they can't be a contender in the east in the next couple of years. teams like boston and detroit are aging, and teams like buffalo, florida are a few years away from being legit.

Oilers are definitely in a better position right now.

We can all agree though, that both teams are in a better position than the Sens.

We can see that simply having high picks year after year does not guarantee success. Edmonton to me still does not look like they have it together upstairs in Management.

The Leafs have started the complete overhaul of the org and how they operate. Heavy emphasis on developing players is the MO going forward. the leafs brought in Hunter and Dubas who were with London and SSM, the 2 teams in the OHL that have had the most draft picks over the past several years. SSM was terrible when Dubas was hired, and they just finished #1 in the league.

the leafs have started to figure it out, Edmonton I dont see it yet

Yeah it seems the Oilers have held onto their former players turned management too long, perhaps out of loyalty or something we're not aware of.

I'll give the leafs that over the Oilers, and we'll see if there is a coaching change in both organizations.

Have to wait to see who wins the draft lottery

So now that the lottery is over, I think the answer is obvious.

Getting McDavid changes everything
Edmonton has also started to overhaul the management which is a good sign. Chiarelli is an upgrade as GM. Is he the one who can put them over the top? Maybe. In Boston he made some good moves but also some questionable moves.

I still would take Dubas/Hunter/New GM over what Edm has, but on the ice they are way ahead of the leafs.

Will be good to revisit after the draft to see if the Leafs have made any big moves

Unless Toronto steals McDavid from Edmonton, without moving their own first, I don't see what they can do at the draft to put themselves ahead of Edmonton.

I'm not sold on Chia being a top GM, outside of signing Chara, he was forced into the best move he made, and squandered what he got from it. And he didn't really have a spectacular drafting record with the Bruins, most of their top prospects were there before he started.

That being said, the groundwork is pretty well laid for him in Edmonton, and he was good enough in Boston to use what was given to him to win the cup.

Did he not also run into Cap issues that forced him to let go (trade) of few players that he probably did not want to?

I don't think it's a surprise to anyone that a nucks fan doesn't know what league plays hockey, since you spend all your time watching a professional diving squad:
