plante and klefbom were their 2nd 1st rder in those drafts though...they went with a forward first. 1999-2014 they have picked a d-man first just twice. Petry (2nd rd pick in 2006, and Nurse in 2013) There is no way any other team is skewed as much towards forwards.

They're still 1st rounders, though. Whether or not they were picked first by them shouldn't mean anything unless you make the argument that their first pick would've been better spent on a Dman. 2009 it was between Kulikov and PRV but there were rumors Kulikov had a verbal contract with a KHL team. Yakupov was BPA in his draft and looking at Murray now the argument for him falls a touch short.

He was off to such a slow start before Bennett returned. obviously they put up good numbers together and Crouse is no slouch, but since it looks like he needs Bennett, I would lower him out of the top 10 in the first round. Just my opinion.

Flyers until recently picked almost exclusively forwards with their first...because all their defense prospects and goalies sucked and they got All-Stars like Carter, Richards, Gagne, Giroux and Williams (not to mention solid players like JVR and Couturier).

the return of sam bennett might have catapulted him into the top 5. this is the only guy pretty much i dont want the leafs to grab. this guy was at 30 points before sam came back. compare that to guys like strome/marner getting 2ppg

Being honest, I lean towards Hanifin as his splits are impressive when compared to now-top NHL defenders who went the college route. I wouldn't be disappointed with any pick- aside from Crouse- within the top-6 players available (McD, Eichel, Hanifin, Marner, Strome, and Provorov).

I think they take Hanifin if they're at 3.
