whats this crap all about

Hockey News

Ilya Kovalchuk could be back in the NHL as soon as the 2016-17 season, according to a report. Sources have said Kovalchuk has informed his KHL club, SKA St. Petersburg, of his desire to return to the NHL. If he chooses to come back before 2018-19, Kovalchuk may need the permission of all 30 NHL teams.

Further verifying what we all figured out a long time ago. Kovalchuks departure was really just a way to get NJ out of his contract/cap hell.

...because Rask didn't want to be a Leaf.

...because Leaf management had made it clear to him that they considered Pogge a higher priority.

Yep.

And I also think that participating in the Canada WJC program is a huge plus for development.

- Atomic Wedgie

Yeah I think so too. I don't think keeping a young guy with the big club is that detrimental to the teams success. If the team sucks like Edmonton, send the guy to get some great experience instead of a losing culture.

If the team is great like Chicago, send them anyway because he's not needed for the success and can only benefit from playing top minutes at the WJC.

They only lost a 1st rounder and yet I'm surprised they didn't give up the 29th overall pick.

Of course they will.
Most money making teams didn't want to subsidize NJ for the term of that contract, so letting him go made financial sense to the bigger teams.

Competitive teams will consider him an option as a FA signing.
non-competitive teams want to see some idiot GM from a competitive team waste a big portion of their salary cap on him, leaving more economical FA's for them, or even the ability to steal players from that team who will need to get under the cap.

without question yes

this will be an ownership decision.. and a player of that calibre is worth huge bucks

they wont even bat an eye.. that.. and they will be stealing a draw power name from the KHL back ... win win

you guys act like the NHL is run by highschool girls with an axe to grind

One scenario..
u expect other Eastern powers to let Kovalchuk just waltz right in and sign with a team like Washington to play with Ovie and the other ruskies?
