Not sure why people get so excited for these ncaa free agent signings. Sure, it costs the team nothing but money, but how many have actually amounted to diddly squat in the last 10 years? The biggest one I can think of is bozak, and now fans want his head served in a silver platter. This kid will be flipping burgers in 2 years just like all the other ones.

"The Toronto Maple Leafs are expected to throw Casey Bailey straight into the fire."

typical (frank)ing Toronto media. HE was the one who wanted to play this year. It was a requirement for him when he signed... smfh.

Are you implying that a 4th overall pick in a deep draft would benefit in his development by playing two additional years in junior? 1 more year in the ohl to dominate and he'll be ready to move up. Ahl is not an option and he won't benefit in junior an additional year...

Pietroangelo went back another year and we kept Schenn with the big club. Look how that turned out?

#3 pick vs #5 pick in the same draft.

Let's be fair:

If he scores a hat trick in his first game, we'll sing his praises for about a week.

And then murder him.

Meh, get to have a peak at him. Still on entry level next year as well. Not expecting much but if he ends up being something then awesome.

I do agree that kids should spend another year in junior.

Having said that, Schenn's problem in the NHL is his footspeed - and another year of junior wouldn't have made a difference.

I definitely support sending him back another year but I'm saying the year after when he's 19 he isn't eligible to play in the AHL so he likely makes the team over going back to junior a fourth year to stay stagnant in his development.

My point still stands that just because it's a top 5 pick doesn't mean they are necessarily ready or couldn't use a year to dominate the minors and work on a few finer points of their game without the pressure.

Also, who wants to toss kids into a losing rebuilding system right away? That's sure great for confidence.

Understood.

I made a mistake about what you were talking about.

I really wish they'd change that rule so he could be in the AHL.

Yep.

And I also think that participating in the Canada WJC program is a huge plus for development.

He hasn't been half bad in Detroit. I think it's more of a Toronto issue.
