The bottom line is, why bother when they are so close to another top 3 pick. MacTavish could have traded for a goalie and at least made an attempt to show they are trying but why bother right ?. Who's to say that if you made a deal for a goalie he wouldn't have helped or resigned.

They had their really bad stretch right after a hot start, similarily to how the sabres lost 15 in a row or whatever shortly after a 10-3 stretch.

They would most likely be around pick 7-9 without their big losing streak. I dont think the oilers are tanking quite the sabres are but no reason to improve after falling to the bottom.

Essentially I agree with 89 and i truly hope the sabres dont end up like the oilers in 4 or 5 years. Picking high consecutively you have to be better at that point.
