Ryan Nugent-Hopkins – The Oilers centre had a couple of assists for the third straight game and has 10 points (3 G, 7 A) in the past five games. As a No. 1 overall pick, in 2011, Nugent-Hopkins comes under a lot of scrutiny. Because Edmonton hasn’t had anything resembling success during his short tenure, he takes a lot of criticism.

But, let’s be fair. He is tied for the scoring lead from that draft class, with No. 1 pick Gabriel Landeskog and since 2000, there are a dozen players who had more than 181 points through their age 21 season. Considering that the Oilers have a dozen games remaining, RNH could easily climb to 11th and a point-per-game finish would put him ninth.

Anyway, given that production, it’s way too soon to start wondering about whether Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will be a No. 1 centre. If he’s not already, ranking 24th among centres with 49 points, then he’s on the cusp at age 21.

This needs to be a part of the ongoing argument. I am open to changing the draft rules but how else to teams get better if players wont allow themselves to be traded to underperforming teams?

They need to stop tweaking the draft order and just go back to worst-is-first method. Like Ek said, throw in a rule that you can't draft first for a few years, or run a loser tourney. If you want to prevent tanking, the lottery is NOT the way to prevent that. The lottery is a big marketing scheme the NHL uses to keep their viewer numbers up. The lottery gives more teams a reason to lose a few more games.

Think about it, 3 teams are tanking to get the top 1-2 pick in the draft this year. What's going to happen next year, when 4 spots are up for grabs? 5,6 heck 7 teams will be trying to lose a few to move up.

Not sure what kind of mental gymnastics you are using here.

Under next year's system, the worst team has basically a 40% chance of not even picking in the top 3.
The 2nd worst team will be closer to 50-60% and on as you go down (up) the standings.

Generally, in the NHL, after the top 5, it's a crapshoot.

What's the point in tanking to come 3rd or 4th last (ie the Leafs/Coyotes) if you aren't even guaranteed to pick in the top 5?

Outside Toronto, Montreal, New York, most NHL markets need to have a competitive team on the ice to sell tickets. Sucking balls for an entire year does not sell tickets.

I also think this year the tanking is more magnified because it's such a strong draft class. If you look, objectively, at the past few drafts, after the top 3 or 4, ranking doesn't matter much. Being 6th or 10th won't make much of a difference if you have garbage scouting.
