I think the teams that should be punished are the cheaters trying to win the Stanley Cup. What gives them the right to just buy players for the playoffs? They shouldn't just be allowed to give away future draft picks like that.

I would argue Buffalo's management set themselves up for this season. BUT, every club has gone through the motions of being great, then sucking, then getting better, then sucking again, etc etc. Not every club is going to be a dynasty like the Red Wings.

Their are many things wrong with that. For one, the only way bottom teams to get better is through the draft and high draft picks. Second if it was equal odds, do really think teams like ottawa, dallas, sharks and calagry would be trying to make playoffs. It could also make teams like boston, jets, wild, and capitals to actually try to avoid playoffs. Would you rather lose in the first round or have chance for mcdavid. It may seem like that would never happen but imagine team like Caps or wild with Mcdavid. It would make them an instant contender. And also keep teams like buffalo and coyotes from getting out of the basement.

If it was completely equal then you are talking about a 7% chance at getting the 1st overall for each team. A team is not going to give up even one round of playoff revenue for a 7% chance.

Klinkhammer and a first say hi back.
Klink has been very effective physically and has given us a quality 4th line.
and I'd assume the first gets used in a package for something we need much more than a scoring winger.

Apples and oranges. Most 1st rd picks in the NFL are expected to make an immediate impact whereas the NHL draft has maybe 3-5 players ready to do that.

But NHL players career length is much longer than NFL. So a first round pick, even if they don't start that next year, could be a much larger impact.

That's what I'm getting at. What about the Blackhawks before they were able to get their top guys via draft? They sucked for a while. And the Kings? They couldn't get goaltending to save their life. Thrashers/Jets? Wild, Predators? All went through tough times and finally turned things around.

I chose to ignore that post. Drafting a dman that will take 3-5 years to be a 1-2D isn't going to be the required immediate fix.
