within the regular season. you just start accounting once you are mathematically eliminated.
Am I not making it clear?
you just have a parallel draft ranking in which you enter once you are eliminated. - yannman
Ok, so let's say tomorrow the Buffalo Sabres are mathematically eliminated effective today. What happens to them? They have the first overall pick? Or they have the lowest pick of non-playoff teams? Or something else? |

Start accounting what? You are making it very much the opposite of clear. - eichiefs9
LoL!
I am taking time here because I really think it works! Bear with me...
Game 63 buffalo eliminated... 20 games to rack up points towards the draft position.
Game 65 edmonton eliminated... 17 games to rack up points...
Game 71 arizona and carolina eliminated... 12 games to rack up points...
and so on!
Makes sense now? |

The most points get first pick...
the worse you are, the more games you have to make points, but you still need to win hockey games! |

So you're still rewarding the worst teams. The first team mathematically eliminated is going to be, likely, the worst team in the entire league. They win by having a longer period of time to accumulate points than teams that take longer to become mathematically eliminated, or...better teams. |

Yes, but you need to win games to draft high! it takes away the tanking in the last quarter of the season.

You're still giving a disproportionate advantage to bad hockey teams. It still pays to be a bad team and be the first team mathematically eliminated. That gives you the best chance, or the most games, to accumulate the most amount of points to "win" the first overall pick.
It pays to be the quickest team to mathematical elimination. |

I watched the entire Oilers game last night against Columbus and they worked their butts off all night. They more than doubled Columbus in shots but McElhinney stole the game for Columbus. The reason the Oilers continue to be a bad team (Bottom 5) rather than an average team (NJ, Philly, Clb, etc.) is that the defence and goaltending MacTavish has assembled is brutal.
People need to shift their attention away from the players in Edmonton. It is all about poor management. Hall, Nugent Hopkins, and Yakupov are all good players but management has tossed them right into the league without developing them. It doesn't matter if the Oilers pick 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in the upcoming draft unless they start giving these young players time to grow in the American Hockey League.
Penalizing the rest of the league for Kevin Lowes ineptitude is completely unfair. Edmonton is a case study in a management group that has been given way too much rope and should have been fired long ago. Every other organization in the league cleans house and is able to turn their franchise around within 2 or 3 years. - Sniped_It
LOL, yea man, he sure hasn't done (frank) all with the defence in the whole 1.5 years he's been GM. How has he not completely reworked and revamped it with a complete set of skill defence when he's had so long to do so?

Lets keep in mind we don't want the best teams drafting first, second or third. Yes, the first eliminated gets a heads up but he has to start winning! If not, he will be passed by teams with less games to account for but that get on a roll. seems the most reasonable idea to me...
A team that tanks from mid season to be mathematically eliminated better turn it around once the points start counting towards the draft |

It is going to stop, if they put a system in place that stops it. - eichiefs9
And I can guarantee you if they do, GM's and owners will be kicking themselves when Their teams window has passed and they need to start rebuilding their team in order to make another run, because they just made it that much harder to do so. |

The best incentive for GM's who want the top pick is still to tank for almost the entire season. |

I'm sure certain GM's and owners hate league profit-sharing too, but the idea is to better the league as a whole.
This isn't a personal attack because you happen to be a Sabres fan, but nobody on earth wants to see that abortion that the Sabres try to pass off as an NHL team play every night. It sucks. Especially when they are somehow awarded 7 nationally televised games. It's an embarrassment to the league, the Sabres, and a passionate fan base. |
