It is not lack of star power. Edmonton has lots of star power right now. It is lack of proper talent development. It is lack of building a cohesive unit that works together. It is lack of understanding the commitment required to win in the best hockey league in the world. This is why you need mentors to help season the kids. People who have been there and no what it takes. You can take the top 5 from 4 consecutive drafts - will that give you a winner - not likely. It takes more than skill. You need to now how to use that skill to win.

I hate to use a basketball team but, The Celtics never sign big time free agents because of the perception of the city being racist coupled with the fact it does not have the appeal of NY, LA or South beach. They've built winning teams through the draft and through trades. But it's also about identifying and acquiring supporting players too.

MACT aside, previous management has badly failed build around what is a talented core of players you have.

The scouting regime before the current certainly badly failed. Those are the guys that would've been playing and helping now.
but I think since the rebuild we can't call those picks failures yet by any means.
