I don't think Berube is at fault for how the season has gone. He certainly shares in the culpability, but it's mostly on the players in my opinion. Whether a coach is at fault or not, it is a results oriented business.
- MJL

I didn't ask about who's fault this season was. I simply asked has Berube, in your estimation, done a good job this year? yes or no .

It certainly adds up though. Other than Giroux, Voracek and Simmonds there really isn't much other offensive production on this team.

I tweeted last night that the 2015 calendar year (taking out the 7 goal and 5 goal outbursts against TB and WPG respectively) we are scoring at a 1.9 GPG pace.... scary!

I already believe Mason should sit. He hasn't since his return.

If Berube starts him on Saturday and Sunday again this weekend I think I'm gonna lose it.

I bet if the Flyers keep Berube as coach and add a top defense pairing, it will be off they go!

Um, no.

Darn! I'm fine when I'm ignored but I really wanted your opinions on Dion Phaneuf and what kind of a bridge gap he could be between Kimmo Timonen and Travis Sanheim.
- SuperSchennBros

Phaneuf is a bad defenseman in my opinion. I've watched him play a lot over his years in Toronto and he just breaks down and makes very dumb decisions in his own zone. His positioning can be questionable and a lot of the time he is too aggressive looking for that big hit. Sure he can move the puck decently and has an okay shot if he ever gets it on net but the negatives really outweigh the positives with Phaneuf and his contract is just terrible. I think Phaneuf would be a good defenseman as number 3 on a good team but coming to the Flyers he would pretty much have all the same pressure on him here as he does in Toronto aside from the Captaincy. A change of scenery doesn't fix Phaneuf's game and lack of hockey sense in his own zone. I really hope Hextall isn't targeting Phaneuf in the off season it wouldn't be a smart move to acquire him and the asking price to do that would likely require one of the team's first round picks. Those are assets I believe the Flyers should keep moving forward especially with how deep this draft seems to be.

His contract would be a tough pill to swallow with the salary problems we already have. He'd definitely make this blueline better, though.

During the deadline stuff, I had heard Toronto was willing to eat a couple million of his salary to make it happen. If they did that, and a reasonable deal could be worked out, I'd be interested. We will need space for the extensions after next season, though.

If I'm Hexy, I tell Berube in no uncertain terms that can't happen. After all, as GM, Mason is your asset whereas to the Coach he's a tool.

Yeah , that is pretty bad. I look at it this way, arguably this past week has been the Flyers biggest so far this season and when Ryan White has been your best forward consistently in that time your team is going to have issues.

The team has regressed back to how they were when Berube took over, but with much worse penalty killing.

So you need to figure out why that is happening. Why are our best offensive players struggling so mightily?

I blame Lappy. He's not teaching guys to block shots with their face.

No doubt. Unfortunately Hextall can't waive a magic wand and fix everything. Would be nice though.
- PLindbergh31

As long as the roster they have is pushing to compete, and we see improvements from the players we have, I'm not worried. I won't say everything Hextall has done is perfect or ideal, but he seems cautious enough.

I think he's a decent player but I'd be worried about that deal. He doesn't seem like the type of defenseman who would age gracefully. Based on the number of bad contracts already on this team, I wouldn't touch him. Too much risk.

Phaneuf has a cap hit of $7M until 2020/2021. At that point, Sanheim will be past his ELC as will Morin, Hagg, and Ghost. That's a bit more than a "bridge" to me. If he had 3-4 more years, maybe I'd be more interested.
- jmatchett383

Well Phaneuf will be 30 next month. I'm thinking Timonen was about the same age when he first got here. We gave up Coburn for space basically. I think if you could move Umberger to Toronto in the deal in a possible buyout situation, you might be able to afford Dion and we fill a need on the backend. I know it's messy because we still need to resign Voracek, Couturier and possibly Schenn. II'm also thinking that we might have to take the hit and buyout Vinny if you can move Umberger cap free.

Case in point, the 2014-15 Wild. Yeo did a great job changing them from a dump/chase team to one of the better teams at holding on to the puck and winning the territorial battle. But his goalies couldn't stop a beach ball and he there was talk about his job being in jeopardy. They pick up Dubnyk, who can stop a beach ball, and off they go.
- Tomahawk

It was ridiculous how quickly people turned on Dubnyk after one bad season up in Edmonton. Like the struggles of the 13-14 Oilers were his fault.

It's a shame Hextall didn't go after a young, healthy guy like him as a free agent. Arizona got him for $800K.

All players go through slumps so realistically for a team to be successful you are going to need other players to step up and score some goals other than your top offensive guys. The supporting cast just hasn't given the Flyers enough offense this season. You can't be expecting Giroux and Voracek to tear it up like they were all season, its just not going to happen especially when they are the guys driving the majority of all the scoring chances. I believe Giroux and Voracek's slumps have to do in part with frustration and line mates these past couple of weeks. At first I was open to splitting them up but it seems like they play much better together and they should have been in those game against Carolina and Toronto when you desperately need those points.

The only thing Hextall has done that makes no sense is the Rinaldo extension. That was just sheer idiocy.

The Umberger for Hartnell deal, while being a cluster(frank), the logic behind it can be rationalized.

Yeah, lot of us did want him to go for Dubie. Definitely better than sticking w/ Emery, who sucks even worse SH this year, no idea how.

I've seen a lot of Phaneuf myself and I wouldn't say he's bad. He just needs to simplify his game. He also needs to choose when to make a big hit better. That bad D in Toronto is on the group, just like our D is on the group. It doesn't mean he's a bad player or we are. I think Toronto has had one bad coach after the other since Pat Quinn too.
