First thing I thought of when reading his post.

Nobody got over on Orr. Sure he was protected but he was tough. He could fight.

- Pairo11

Admittedly I have not watched a lot of his games as of late...but when i did watch him...Ovie seems like a tough SOB "to play against"

not sure what's up with him, schultzie...I will say darcy was notorious for favoring players like Grigorenko--soft, but skilled
- Michael Pachla

Darcy also drafted Girgensons and Kassian and signed John Scott. I think he was just a push over. Basically did anything to just keep fans at bay. I remember the reaction when grigorenko had fallen in the draft and the "if darcy doesnt take grigorenko!!" posts.

in all fairness to darcy, the sabres almost had to pick Grigorenko...ya gotta give that much skill an opportunity, especially at 12...the Girgensons pick was really out of character for him...wonder if devine had anything to do with that?

I didn't want them to take him. I was so pissed Forsberg went the pick before. My anger was lessened when they traded back up to get Girgensons though.

Ej will be as good if not better than kapernick. Don't understand why no on wants to give him a chance. Before he was drafted, he was as good as Russell Wilson and better than kapernick when tested. I would like to see him get the support of the fans and see what he can do with some good support. He was pulled too early last year, but hopefully learned a lot. Our offense was completely impotent last year regardless of who was the qb.

I was praying that Forsberg would fall to us! Man was i pissed. I didn't want grigo. There was a reason so many teams passed on him.

maybe y'all can help...imo, kassian was more of a larry Quinn pick to me...seems as if he really needed a marketing tool and a tough draft pick to go with "la core" was something to energize the fan base...

thoughts?

Can't bring on a coach like Rex, trade for MCoy, give out big contracts, try and sell Buffalo to others players and then not have a franchise QB. Can't wait 2 more years, we need one now.

I remember that happening so clearly. Forsberg falling, falling, and snapped up just before we picked. Then, talking myself into Grigo. I WISH I could say something about a jury still being out BUT...

It could be. It's interesting to actually look back at the last 5 years or so of drafting. You can see a difference in the types of players they targeted over the first few in comparison to the last few. I think once Pegula took over the team, Devine played a much bigger role, and we've seen much better drafting. He's the reason we have both Risto and Zadorov. He wanted them both, and he bypassed Darcy at the draft table by asking Terry, "Do you want to get tougher to play against?"

Why? Just because he was listed as a high pick? Jets could have used that rationalization at 9th overall but decided on Trouba. I don't think the girgensons pick was out of character. I think that's someone they clearly had in mind. He's taken that type of player before in Kassian. In the 08 draft Darcy went off the board and took Tyler Ennis and everyone poop on him for taking "another small player" instead of the great Nicholas Deschamps.

It's funny, lot's of praise was given to darcy after "stealing" grigorenko that year and landing Hodgson that deadline. Yet you could argue his best draft came the year where both his 1st rounders (Risto and Zads) were heavily criticized by people here and at the draft party.

I don't think one led to the other. From what I remember they were pretty much set on Ristolainen at 8 and the play for Zadorov only came when they noticed he fell to 16. Pretty sure their original plan was to trade up to draft Domi.

I loved both picks. I thought it was awesome that they took both. I never thought they'd be able to do that.

It may have been. But if Darcy was running that draft table, they would never have taken another defenseman. They would have taken who they felt was the next best available forward.
