So everything said online is just words and no one can be held accountable for actions? even people who relay the tweet/statement to millions of viewers?
- jps7878

You are liable for on-line statements as well. But it's pretty hard to show damages because of what Tony from Woodbridge says on-line - unless of course it becomes more widely seen.

The media aren't only being critical based on play/results - which is the only thing they are paid to comment on.
Kessel had some of the highest fitness testing scores in training camp. "He is out of shape and fat." According to what measure? "
Phaneuf is the Leafs captain - why is he wearing a Red Bull hat after games for interviews? Our lines are open..."
You seriously can't acknowledge it's gone overboard in this market? In your heart of hearts you really believe it's just about Kessel thinking people are mean to him and his friends?

- Deeps27

Of course.

Then again, how many on these boards criticize Kessel for his lack of implication and heart during the season?

You're all singing the same tune as the media, and then act offended. Come on.

My guess is that this ends in a flurry of apologies, and hopefully some lessons learned.

Unlike some on here, I commend the three of them for what they are doing. They are taking a stand against cowards posting knowingly-false crap, thinking there are no consequences.

I'd rather teach my kids about standing up for what you think is right, rather than telling them to just accept what cowards are saying about them as part of life.

TSN will donate $10K to a bullying charity with accompanying PR and statements. The kid is so scared poopless he will never go near Twitter again. The world will forget in a month.

Wrong. By Tweeting it with the attached hashtag, the kid accepted the responsibility that TSN might put it on air, as that is what the hashtag was being used for. If you want proof of how a tweet can go viral, even before being picked up on by the media, just look at the whole "dress colour" fiasco from last week...
- lumlums

So basically either Lupul boned Elisha Cuthbert or some kid is getting sued?....

You're missing the point Dozzer. It's not a question of protecting feelings. If only feelings are hurt, you don't have a case. You need to show some real damage. But, there can be a fairly wide definition of damage.

i better call my lawyer and see how i can respond to this first.
- Dozzer

I think the biggest difference in argument here Doz, is that this guy was LOOKING for a reaction using the proper hashtags, making false accusations about players wives, during a team where millions would be watching/tweeting/looking up things related to the team. And is led to believe that that's, okay. Because you're not a member of the media, you can say anything you want online cause it has no effects on anyone.

Well, clearly we can see that this isn't true, or we wouldn't all be sitting here chatting about it.

Affairs or false assumption of affairs dont equal jail time. If he gets a fine what are they stealing from the kid, his lunch money for school? waste of time and effort. Plus he is not the source of that rumor or troll to begin with. So if we search all the tweets made of lupul banging phaneufs wife, i am sure you would have a pile of people/accounts to sue

If Phil lost it because of a tweet, I think Shanahan should really consider getting out of his ivory tower and have a word or two with both his players AND the media.
- Pecafan Fan

the media won't change and neither will the fan base.
We need to collectively look at ourselves and the media and seriously questions ourselves.
1. Our media comprises of Kypreos (a third to 4th line plug), Aaron Ward (a plug), Healy (a backup goalie) and a bunch of analysts that did not play pro hockey. We then let them tell us how untalented our players are, when reality is, they are far more talented than any of them.
Take Kessel for example: he is in the top 5 in goals scored in the last 5 years. That is an ELITE talent, whether you want to admit it or not.
And yet
Look at how Kessel has been treated by the media. Classless acts by reporters who hound him and ask dumb questions.
Remember when the reporter called Reimer's mother?
What about fan that keyed Versteeg's car?

So why hire a guy to filter tweets in the first place?
- jps7878

Pretty sure they did. Generally not jaunt an auto filter... It's live moderated for shot that goes ion air.

And ya tsn can fire that guy and be justified, but that isn't the issue at hand.

Elisha Cuthbert is an actress - smearing her reputation could easily be seen as having monetary implications.

- Big_Lightnin

No but they do go after his personal character, but they quote people and cite stuff to back it... He should have hurt feelings over it....

One million "fans" post it on social media. Two million people read it and nod sadly.

10 media outlets run stories on it. Two million people read it...and lose their minds over the insensitivity of the media.

same with Lupul, all jokes aside, if its out there that Lupul is accused of this, it may hurt his chances of a team wanting him in a trade, and therefore hurt his livlihood..

Again, criticise the play. Break it down, show what should be done better. Attacks on personality such as "is this the face of a coach killer" and "The uncoachables" is where the line is crossed.

yeah... the tv show ONE BIG HAPPY is reeling from the news... 1 of the 5 people who actually watch it was so disgusted at the fact she may or may not have slept with lupul they decided to stop watching it

they now only have 4 viewers.. and a 20% decline in viewership has put the show on the rocks
