My daughter, myself and my wife watched a movie called cyberbully recently together, it left a huge impression on my daughter about what you say online, the movie was loosely based on Megan Taylor Meier. We thought it was important to show her the consequences that can happen.

Yeah thats more for highschool students calling each other whores and ridiculed which makes them depressed which can lead to suicide. We are talking about grownups here being ridiculed by a highschool student who are making millions of dollars

who (frank)ing cares?

my god.. tattle tale whiners.. the whole lot.

and insults are not threats.. there is a difference

- Dozzer

The point of this is going way over your head. I'm not saying that this tweet is the epitome of the problem but it is absolutely in the same ballpark of spewing vile things on the internet with zero fear of repercussion. I agree that there is too much coddling and participation medals these days, but this is not the same.

No but you set and enforce limits that align with your moral code - no racist, homophobic, misogynistic posts.

The criminal code of Canada imposes its own limits and the Phaneufs and Lupul have a right to go to the courts if they believe those limits were breached.

this is a privately owned site where freedom of expression is moot. you either get in line with the operator's wishes or you will not be posting.

threats are not what i am talking about here.. let me make that clear.

- Dozzer

Neither are we.

"You're a fat (frank)in slut" is not a threat.

How old is your daughter Lou? Can you shoot me a PM with the title? My daughter is 7 and I should probably show that to her soon. Or my niece anyway.

Y'know, it's funny. This situation. It reminds me of a joke. See, there were these two guys in a lunatic asylum . . .

And one night, one night they decide they don't like living in an asylum any more. They decide they're going to escape! So, like, they get up onto the roof, and there, just across this narrow gap, they see the rooftops of the town, stretching away in the moonlight. . . Stretching away to freedom.

Now the first guy, he jumps straight across with no problem. But his friend, his friend daren't make the leap. Y'see . . . Y'see, he's afraid of falling.

So then the first guy has an idea ... He says, hey! I have my flashlight with me. I'll shine it across the gap between the buildings. You can walk along the beam and join me! B-but the second guy just shakes his head. He suh-says . . . He says, Wh-what do you think I am? Crazy?

You'd turn it off when I was halfway across!

Not the point - this site sets limits. The criminal code sets limits. There are consequences in either setting if you don't abide by those limits.

The difference is that there is no right to defend yourself here (which is alright because you are all-seeing and all-knowing).

Dude those are news articles about the kids who killed themselves because they were bullied online. And not threatened, bullied.

Not telling you to read the bullying... Just have a look at what it causes. Over and over again.

It's never to early to teach values to a child.

Plus I was responding to what the poster's comment was.

No matter if you're 10 to 99 or beyond, you are responsible for what you write and say, social media has changed the world and whether you like it or not, your words can have serious consequences.

So would you be OK if I started calling you a child molester?

And I sent emails to all of your neighbours, telling them that you shouldn't be trusted near their children, because you are a serial child rapist?

I'm not threatening you - I'm just spreading lies.

Are you angry? Or should you just learn to deal with it?

I understand that. But my point is celebrities are heckled every single day. If there were consequences for everything on twitter, lawyers would rule the world and there would be so many court cases from twitter/social media

jesus.. think before you speak

"Section 2 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is the section of the Constitution of Canada that lists what the Charter calls "fundamental freedoms" theoretically applying to everyone in Canada, regardless of whether they are a Canadian citizen, or an individual or corporation.[1] These freedoms can be held against actions of all levels of government and are enforceable by the courts. The fundamental freedoms are freedom of expression, freedom of religion, freedom of thought, freedom of belief, freedom of peaceful assembly, and freedom of association."
