I realize you're joking but Chicago is an extremely corrupt city and has massive massive debt and is very close to being the next Detroit bankrupt city. Democrats have pulverized the Illinois economy while all the surrounding states have flourished under Republicans. Illinois had a republican in for a while but when he tried to fix a lot of the corrupt crap he was recalled and kicked out.

I am so sick of it all. It's like accusing someone of something and then allowing them to judge their own fate. Of course the media feels they've done nothing wrong.
- Deeps27

It's hilarious that they are acting innocent and trying to blame other in the media.....

How big of a douchebag inflated ego are you if you write about that time when the famous athlete didn't recognize you in line at Starbucks.

He was talking about supporting a competitive company. Not a division of their own.

i read that article and i didn't find Kelly acting innocent at all. he admitted the media could pile on in circumstances. defend this group of players all you want but i thought that was a really interesting/insightful piece on the interaction between media and players.

Each team is an independently owned franchise of the NHL, but they don't compete against eachother financially. It doesn't make sense to do that.

They do have 1 vote. Not even sure what the bolded means..
- bixll

the league works for the teams and is run by the teams. The league is not some separate entity imposing its will on the teams.

The leafs happily took in expansion fees while watching their one vote get diluted down.

Who's defending anything?

Seemed to me to come off douchy..... Talks about the athlete not acknowledging the reporters and that's why they get ripped? Are you (frank)ing kidding me?

He's blaming the players for the treatment they receive. Utter trash.

"I will not protect kessel anymore"

Yeah, that'll get the players (any of them) to speak with you more. The media feels that they are entigtled to act like ass and the athlete are obliged to speak to them, and give them good quotes.

An article about how MSM are biased and hold a grudge ... very insightful stuff

I dont see the value in these media interviews before/after games...I really dont care what the players have to say 99% of the time

It's pretty sad actually. The unfortunate part in todays "content age" is that we all lap it up...content in abundance, in short form, no matter the quality can be consumed and discarded with relative ease. It reminds me of the stat in Howard Stern's "Private Parts" that mentions how long fans listen for, and how long people who hate him listen for...the latter spent more time listening so they could be ready for their next outrage moment.

When your rights (freedom of the press, gun laws, etc) are written 300 years ago it's no surprise they aren't effective for an technologically and socially evolved population.

I think the next time a thief is accused of shop-lifting they should have a panel of shop-lifters and stick-up men decide on their fate. Obviously the Toronto media feels they can self-regulate - I think as citizens we should push for this in other areas too...what could go wrong?

Hockey media in Toronto and, to a lesser extent Montreal, is unlike what you see elsewhere around the League. There is so much coverage and competition that a lot of reporters put a lot of effort in trying to get noticed - Feschuk calling Reimer's mom or making a big deal out of what an assistant coach said at a minor hockey session, Siegal not protecting Kessel, Simmons every time he opens his mouth.

From what I understand, Montreal went through very contentious period between press and players/team a while back. I'm sure that Vancouver, Edmonton, etc face this to a lesser degree but they don't have the same media concentration as here.

Elsewhere in the league, the media is trying actively to promote the game and is way more sympathetic.

I personally like the argument from Cox. "If you think we are bad, you should see social media!" That's great.... because why should "professionals" in the mainstream media have to be held to higher standards.

Dreger the train wreck or car accident I cant look away from

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke
Dreger "because of this market and how nasty/poisonous it can be, if you're a UFA what are the chances you're signing in TO? Almost none"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke
Dreger "if you're a player that matters and is coveted, they watch the Clarkson situation. They saw he was playing badly, but..."

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke
Dreger "...He chose the Leafs & look how quickly things went ugly for Clarkson & his family"

Hope_Smoke ‏@Hope_Smoke
Dreger "this org better draft damn well & develop even better bc they're going to have to fix this internally & it's going to be tough"

Leafs better draft well because they overpaid a crappy player and now they wont come here

draft well, start winning and players will come... Winning changes everything
the leafs just tried to skips steps..which failed miserably.

At what point did Phil Kessel and Dion Phaneuf became victims exactly?

Because all you guys do since december is say how they suck and they should be traded. And now that the media are on their backs, you guys turn around and defend them no matter what?

I have to say, this is hilarious.
