out of the original 6, why are 3 of them not as successful financially as the other 3? What's Chicago, Detroit and Boston's excuse?
- Symba007

Detroit is in the decrepit cesspool of Detroit.

Chicago was run by a goddamn lunatic for a long time.

Boston is... well... (frank) Boston.

It's how countries run. It's how businesses all over the world run. Why would this be any different?

More markets mean more potential customers. You can't really compare the success of a team that's been around for 20 years vs a team that's been around for 100. 100 years is a long damn time to set up a strong customer base.

nah the big companies buy out the little ones creating a monopoly.

and i do agree, 100 year old team should have more followers than a team thats 20 years old

Ya, but is your competitor picking up the bill ??
- bixll

The teams all work for the same company. They aren't competitors in that sense.

Think of it like a national government like Canada. Everybody has to pay their taxes. The rich provinces have to pay more taxes and the government distributes them to the poorer provinces.

So, just out of curiosity, if you have those 3 teams generating that much of the revenue, why would you worry about any of them? Wouldn't you focus instead on making your other branches profitable instead of trying to squeeze more out of your flagships?
- BINGO!

i think the Thrill was talking moreso about jersey sales for mcdavid (in toronto) would literally be able to pay for florida and arizona for 2 seasons of hockey.

that would increase the overall value of the NHL and bettmans pockets.

not saying its going to happen i just think thats his point

Okay but these teams are not competitors in that sense. They work in conjunction in order to benefit the league as a whole. Hence the attempted level playing field in the form of a salary cap.

It is not in the best interest of the league to have teams simply die while others thrive and force the smaller markets into non-competitiveness. There isn't a pro sports league in the world that runs like that.

No,, No,,, and (frank)

The Cap was put in by the league to prevent the teams like the Leafs from buying up all of the good players. Creating, or attempting to create parity.

Unbiased. adjective 1. not biased or prejudiced; fair; impartial.

What we learned in the last 24 hours:

The Toronto media does not feel they are unreasonably harsh on the Leafs, no moreso than any other (Canadian) market. They feel their coverage is even handed, respectful and above board in all manner. Players around the NHL are well aware of the unreasonable nature of the Toronto media, to the point they are commenting "give Phil a break" at the ASG and avoiding signing in Toronto like we still have the plague.

The Toronto media feels Phil is out of line for his comments RE media treatment of his friend.

The media also criticizes Mr. Kessel for not speaking to them on a regular basis, then has the audacity to complain about and question the validity of the substance of his responses and/or chosen topic when he does.

The Toronto media is biased in their defense of their actions and unreasonable in their practice.

Fin.

Oh and I'm sure they could, but that's a short-term fix. Why not get a short-term boost in a franchise and dramatically increase the likelihood of long-term success in that market at the same time?

Exactly... which doesn't make sense as a strategy unless you want the smaller market teams to survive....
