There is definitely a shift in the dynamic of the 3rd pair D men. There just are not minutes for these guys anymore.
I would almost say that if you want a "tough" guy on your roster, it should be a third pair D man, as long as you have those stud minute eaters on the front pair.

Most teams are still finding 15-17 minutes for the third pair guys, or at least the 5th guy.

But those big, top pair all situation guys who can eat a ton of minutes are basically vital for contenders.

Del Zotto has been doing that all season. He does a lot of things well but the moment he tries to lead the rush himself, it works against him. It's great he wants to be a different maker but he's not "the guy".
