I should've said right off the bat that it was Schefter, but I was too busy watching twitter light up. My bad.

My brothers both think he's really good, but coming off an injury. The older one said he wasn't surprised at it.
- Jsaquella

I'm mildly surprised, but it's not a bad trade. Alonso is a difference maker on defense. Best MLB they've had since Trotter and it's not even close

Mccoy never fit this offense. Foles will be gone too. RB's are a dime a dozen
- Just5

Didn't McCoy lead the league in rushing playing in that offense?

yeah. they just need to be selective.

dont take a guy just because he is there, or even if he is the best guy on the market available. take him because you genuinely believe he is the right guy for what you need.

i'm big on not wasting 3 or 4 prime years as well. it is a tricky thing though, to attempt to juggle the two approaches at once. ultimately, i still think its the way that has to be taken though.

- stayinthefnnet

Selectivity is the key. You can't have 3 or 4 guys who are no better than a 4th defenseman making $3mm or more. It gobbles up cap room and limits what you can do.

I don't give a rat's ass about having cap space, I care about having a huge contract on a secondary player that basically renders him unmoveable or at the very least limits his trade value.

I don't need to win the "Most Salary Cap Room" Cup, but I also think that it's foolish to have the highest payroll in the NHL and ice a 21st place team.

yeah i really need to step my twitter game up.

but thats about as official as it gets right? thats pretty wild.

i think thats a good move for the eagles actually.

- stayinthefnnet

They also cut Trent Cole. Opens up a lot of money to re-sign Maclin and pursue other good players. I see them making moves to bolster their secondary.

ESPN Stats & Info ‏@ESPNStatsInfo 3m3 minutes ago

LeSean McCoy's 4.2 yds per rush in 2014 was 22nd in NFL; his 5.1 yds/rush in 2013 was a top-5 average

My brothers treat football like a religion. I can pick a random name off a roster, call one of those two and they can tell me his school & size, plus list a strength & weakness.

So
Sixers trade MCW
Flyers trade Kimmo and Coburn
Eagles trade McCoy

Hamels, Howard, Lee and Utley should probably pack their bags

They're gonna have to, only Malcolm Jenkins remains from the 4 starters. Cut Cary Williams today, too

I can do that with skilled position players.

I know Alonso went to Oregon. He was one of the best defensive players in football during his rookie season.

I'm talking backup guards. It's ridiculous. Both of them can do it.

yeah kelly's first year. Same year Foles had 29 tds and 2 ints, etc. Bit of an anomaly.

I think this offense needs a one cut straight ahead type back, like a Frank Gore to be more effective.

The biggest reason the Flyers are a 21st place team, is because they lack a legitimate top defense pair. The secondary contracts aren't what prevented the Flyers from having a top defense pairing. More of reactionary to the career ending injury to Pronger. Losing Timonen to the clot issue also hurt. I have no doubt that if he played this season, the Flyers would be a much better team. They also had significant injuries that led to Coburn missing time, as well as Mason. If Mason had been healthy all year, I'd speculate the Flyers would have a better record.
They have some things to work out, no doubt. I still believe in the core of this team, and the future of this team. I think the situation is not as bleak as many make it out to be.

The key, for now, has to be to avoid the general overpayment, or maybe especially the "paying market value" that ends up being spun as "in a year or two, when the cap goes up, his deal will look OK".

It's not the $8mm Giroux deal, the $4.1mm Mason deal, the $5.25mm Streit deal that has the Flyers tip toeing the cap. It's paying $4.5mm for an oft-scratched 4th line RW, $4.5mm for an unproductive veteran 3rd line LW, $3.6mm for an inconsistent third pair defenseman or $3.5mm for an injury prone stay at home 4-5 guy or $5mm for a solid 4-5 defenseman that has seen a string of healthy scratches.

That's $21.1mm against the cap for guys who are, in most cases, playing at replacement level or worse. Even MacDonald, who has been solid in his secondary role, is overpaid for it right now, even if the deal won't look bad in a year or two. I want more deals like Wayne Simmonds or Jake Voracek-ones that looked good from the get go and remain good looking.

As for bargains working out, in the cases of MDZ and Schultz, they were guys who played at a fairly high level and had a bad year or bad situation. Guys like Kurtis Foster and Bruno Gervais were never really that good to begin with or suffered serious injuries that limited their abilities.

- Jsaquella

Well said, dude!!

You're throwin rocks tonight!!

The Vinny signing is the one that just exasperates me. There was just no need to go out and sign an aging scoring center who was on the decline. None. At least AMac is serviceable, just overpaid. Vinny, though, man, what a cluster(frank).

I know you don't love the Schultz signing, but at least its only a 2 year deal at a reasonable cost. Plus I think he's the type of guy that can be successfully paired with a youngster in a year or 2.

i was surprised to see that they couldnt come to terms with a restructure for cole.

yeah the money is definitely there.

i really dont think maclin is a true number one, but he has value to the eagles. he just isnt someone that i would want to commit top dollar to.

i would look to bring him back, but there should also be a glut of veterans available at the position.

the secondary HAS to be addressed. maxwell doesnt strike me as an uber stud, but hes the best out there right now. mccorty might be available as well.

I think it's more about Kelly realizing that McCoy like a lot of running backs is going to fade fast, then it is about McCoy not fitting the offense.

Yeah. The Eagles also threw in the dead rat that clown Didinger wears on his head.
