Briere didn't get them in trouble, that was a great signing. Timonen and Hartnell, while technically trades, were essentially free agents that worked out well overall as well. Especially Timonen. Just because a few didn't work out, doesn't mean they should not use free agency.

They got lucky with both Del Zotto and Schultz. It's interesting that some free agent signings in the past that didn't work out are referenced as reasoning for avoiding free agency, but the bargain basement shopping flops of the past is ignored. There certainly is far less risk in bargain basement shopping, but it's not a reliable way of building a team.

yeah. its more about just finding the right player.

if they could get boychuk for 6.5, and move schenn/grossmann, it would require some more maneuvering elsewhere, but i dont necessarily think its just blowing money.
