Connolly for a second this year and a second next year, not bad from a straight trade look. Bolts perspective to me is they have a young guy coming up next year in Vlad who needs a roster spot, if they felt they were not going to resign Connolly then jump on trading him now why the market is at its high. They lost Panik for nothing so I am sure Yzerman didn't want that to happen. Connolly was starting to accept his lower line role and played good but of all the forwards he was the most expendable, watching him live he tended to cheat towards the offensive zone while playing D and I watched Cooper bench him multiple times because of it. Now Drouin will play more, you still have Brown who plays hard along with more forwards in the pipe line.
Killorn-Stamkos-Callahan
Palat-Johnson-Kucherov
Drouin-Filppula-Namestnikov
Morrow-Boyle-Paquette
Brown
Now Paquette is well suited to play on Boyles line or Fils line so they still have the flexibility in the lineup with him, Drouin and Killorn as roamers thru the lines. - stammerman
That 3rd line is pretty small. Maybe swap Drouin and Killer |

That is what everyone wants but Cooper is still reluctant to do it. Kinda why I said Drouin, Killer, and Paquette are roamers thru the lines. If you put Killorn with Fil and Vlad that would be a good line, Bolts would have three good fast scoring lines. I agree Morrow can go to the hill but it looks like he is around as well.
Michael I know Connolly was your boy but you had to expect something like this might happen, for whatever reason Connolly was the square peg trying to fit into a round hole on the Bolts. I think he can be a top 6 guy, we will find out now that he is going to Boston. |

Connolly for two seconds?? Jury is out on that one. I was never a big believer in Connolly, but I was warming up to him and he had recently won me over. However, as far as I am concerned, we have players who are just as talented in the pipeline and available currently. Trade him while he still has some value assuming he ultimately turns out to be a bust. If he blossoms in Boston into a dangerous player, then we just handed a weapon to one of our mortal enemies.
In a good draft, a 2nd is nothing to sneer at. 3rd and later, yes. We have drafted some good players out of the second round. If we can land two Palats for one Connolly, then it's a win.
The Connolly deal has no clear winner yet.
The Coburn deal is puzzling. I loved Gudas and hate to see him go. But, he is not the most gifted player in terms of overall skill level in any particular area. Not a great skater (to be generous), not fast, average puck handling, and needs to be paired with a solid defensive partner. On the upside, he has a fearsome beard and hipcheck. If Coburn will play physical for us, then I don't see us losing physicality much. Also, remember, Gudas just underwent a full-blown knee-job. He may emerge as a worse skater than before. The best skaters can lose a step after major knee surgery - Gudas was never a great skater to start with.
The price is high for reliable/competent defensemen, and Yzerman paid apparent market value for Coburn. I will leave it up to Mike to delve into Coburn's advanced stats and tell us more. My jury is out here.
I think we are a better team today, but I am not sure if we paid too much.

So Boston gave up 2 2nd rounder for Connolly, but wild have to only give up a 2017 2nd rounder for Stewart? And Buffalo keeps 1/2 salary?!?!

My 2 cents on Coburn from a Flyers fan perspective.
Coburn is an ideal compliment to a #1 or a #2 defensive pairing, IE riding shotgun with your top pair guy or being a solid 2nd pair guy.
He skates very well and is in top shape. He kills penalties, and will give you 20 minutes a night like clockwork.
Pair him with Hedman, and watch Hedman move in to the stratosphere of elite defensemen. Coburn is a mobile guy who can hold the fort solidly, quietly, and consistently while your #1 does his thing. It is playing him AS your #1 where he will get in to trouble.
Don't listen to the trolls.
And he will up his physical game in the playoffs.
You got a good player and you definitely upgraded your defense. |

That hurts, we could have topped that, but I guess Yzerman felt that we need more of a shutdown guy. |

Nice assessment. Glad to hear this. Def an upgrade on Gudas in size and ability but sorry to see him go. We were a little soft and short on experience so this is welcome. It will be nice to see a Dman that can throw a check responsibly for a change, plus our group except for Gudas seemed content on stick checking too much. |

Yzerman was just on Lightning radio and said they were able to move Connolly because they already had a player in mind in house for his spot. But he did not say who that player was. |
