That wasn't the point of acquiring them at that point. Yzerman saw that team with a chance to go deep, and that window was closing, so he took his chance with some players that season, realizing that a slight rebuild was coming. He didn't acquire them for the years after, he acquired them for that run. - j.boyd919
He resigned Roloson and brewer (just traded Brewer a couple months ago). |

He re-signed Roli to a 1 year deal. Again, that 1 year didn't work out but hardly was damning to the future. And after the playoff run bringing him back made all the sense in the world vs letting him walk and replacing him with ________??????
Brewer wasn't awful either. He was forced out by lack of time but when properly placed on the 3rd pair and kept under the 20 min threshold he was solid. Hardly ingredients to say it was a bad deal |

Could've snagged Michalek or Yandle.
Sounds like Yzerman panicked after missing some other players.

I understand that, but the goalie market wasn't exactly appealing. Considering Roloson just took them one game away from the Stanley Cup, I think resigning Roloson to a 1 year deal was much deserved. And yes Brewer has declined, no one could have imagined it to be such a steep decline. But look at that roster and compare it to this year... Stammer, Hedman, Brown are the only players left from that team... he knew damn well that was that teams only chance to win, and he took that chance.. but he also stressed numerous times to the fans of Tampa to be patient, that he's trying to have sustainable winning, which in my opinion, this team is built for 100%. |

For the price they got for Yandle no thanks. I would have loved him in Cooper's system but given what we would have had to send back no thanks.
Damn near every trade is an overpayment right now. It's a sellers market just like 2012 when Yzerman was selling off bottom liners like Moore and Kubina for 2nd rounders.

Yup. Each deadline is different with different teams in different situations. This deadline was set off by the Franson deal and given the lack of teams and players selling had all the makings of overpay central.
That being said, Coburn has another year so I'm happy with the deal since we didn't go get a marginal upgrade player for a high price. We paid a high price but IMO Gudas wasn't long for us anyways. I loved his style and his hitting but when push comes to shove he's a bottom pair d-man and nothing more (and given our depth also expendable).

Morrow was Yzerman proverbial "veteran pickup" for the playoffs... He just got him before the season instead of at the deadline and didn't have to give up anything.
He just shore up his defense heading to the playoffs, without touching his core or giving up the farm/future assets.
We're looking better today than yesterday. |

Connolly for a second this year and a second next year, not bad from a straight trade look. Bolts perspective to me is they have a young guy coming up next year in Vlad who needs a roster spot, if they felt they were not going to resign Connolly then jump on trading him now why the market is at its high. They lost Panik for nothing so I am sure Yzerman didn't want that to happen. Connolly was starting to accept his lower line role and played good but of all the forwards he was the most expendable, watching him live he tended to cheat towards the offensive zone while playing D and I watched Cooper bench him multiple times because of it. Now Drouin will play more, you still have Brown who plays hard along with more forwards in the pipe line.
Killorn-Stamkos-Callahan
Palat-Johnson-Kucherov
Drouin-Filppula-Namestnikov
Morrow-Boyle-Paquette
Brown
Now Paquette is well suited to play on Boyles line or Fils line so they still have the flexibility in the lineup with him, Drouin and Killorn as roamers thru the lines. |

Coburn for a 1st, 3rd, and Gudas. Coburn is better then alot of people give him credit four and now that he is on the Bolts and not depended on being the top guy he should be fine 2nd pair guy. Gudas was overrated but man was he a fun player to root for. The third is a wash so I say Coburn for Gudas and 1st is an upgrade plus we keep Coburn for another year unlike Petry or the rentals. What does puzzle me is that he is a left handed shot when we needed right so that confuses me. But the Bolts D is now better then it was to start the year.
Hedman-Stralman
Coburn-Garrison (can Coburn play right side? 1 lefty is going to have to)
Carle-Sustr
Nesterov-Barberio
Not too shabby if you ask me. Lots on here don't like Sustr but he is young and playing hard minutes because of injury and doing ok so I'll take that. |
