To pur it another way, the Rangers have a pretty good shot to end up like the Phillies between lack of pipeline, lack of picks, and impending contracts.

Gonna be interesting.

I hope they end up sucking for 30 years. (frank) em.

No I agree.
I thought the Rag's would need to get there forwards in order first, before acquiring a top 4 D man to play on the bottom pairing.
Haggling with Zuccarello over 1/2 a million, doesn't make sense.

The rags' highest pick n 2013 was a 3rd rounder (Duclair). The following season, their highest pick was a 2nd rounder.

The Marty St. Louis deal leaves the without a first round pick this year, and they traded away their 2nd this year as well in the Yandle deal. They get a 2nd rounder, though, if Callahan re-signs with TB before March 5th. Don't really see that happening though.

They're also without their 2nd round pick next season because of the Yandle trade.

If I'm a Rangers fan I'm starting to get concerned

true. but they do have a good amount of their core still on the young side of things. they are definitely a win now team for the next 2 or 3 years though.

Has to be a pipe dream. What would the Flyers have to include, or take back in any deal that looks like that, is what I'm wondering. I'd love to be able to listen to those conversations.

Arizona intrigues me. That have to be nearing the cap floor and are going full rebuild it seems.
other than that, I have nowhere to legitimately trade vinny to.

Do you honestly believe Stralman isn't a top 4 dman though? Thats all I was disagreeing with you about. I think the trade for Yandle is fair value. Not overpayment, but certainly not underpayment.

I just think this trade and the MSL could come back to haunt them in the future.

- PhillySportsGuy

Maloney held out dealing Yandle for a long time and certainly got maximum value. If Gormley can eventually assume a top 4 role, they won't miss Yandle that much at all.

definitely could see it 4 or 5 years from now. but if they can squeeze a cup out in between then, that is everything for them.

Yeah. I think this was the best time to deal him too. A team can get two playoff runs out of him before FA. Rangers look good right now and Coyotes could potentially have a bright future

All that really matters is how the team winds up and what kind of team success they have. The Rangers have certainly added a dynamic offensive defenseman to their team. I think they overpaid though. I don't see Yandle as an all around player, and top defenseman that you give up that haul for. As another poster mentioned, they would have been better off keeping Stralman, and what they traded for Yandle.

I like the Rangers chances more than the Pens. I'm just glad so many teams in the Metro are trading their picks to win now. If the Flyers can get their poop together in a few years, they will be in good shape in the division.

I think Stralman has played really well the last two seasons, but I feel he is a third-pair player on a good team, which is not a crime

I think Yandle has been a top 4 defenseman all his career, including good Coyotes teams. They did make the playoffs four years in a row with him in that role

Would I rather have Stralman, Duclair and the 1st? It depends on how good you think Yandle truly is

I think he is a really, really good player, and it's close

Agreed, because I doubt Maloney was going to resign him. It also helps set the market for Coburn if Hexy wants to deal him. I'm not suggesting Hexy can get the same return for him, but it does help establish some parameters in a deal. I believe it is 50/50 Coburn is on the roster after the deadline.

We just disagree on Stralman. I feel he's been top 4 on a good team the last 3 years. I think you can make a case he's been a top pair dman for Tampa this year.

I think your underrating both players. Yandle is top pairing on any team in this league besides for MAYBE St. Louis. Stralman is only a 3rd pairing guy on maybe St. Louis or New York.

Stralman was a top 4 defenseman last year on the Rangers, who went to the Stanley Cup finals. Stralman averaged 21:03 in TOI in the playoffs last season. He currently plays for TB, a top team in the Eastern conference, and is second overall in total icetime for TB, averaging 22:05 TOI. That's two good teams that Stralman has been a top 4 defenseman on.

Are we arguing that Stralman is as good as Yandle?

Or?

And yet, somehow the Lightning were in the East semis last year without Stralman, and the Rags are doing just fine this year without him

Sather let one walk...but acquired the other

Stralman's a complementary piece...nice to have, but ultimately replaceable

And Sather replaced him, and upgraded

I just like that the Pens and Rangers are burning picks in trades, and they have to battle each other for the cup, along with a couple other interested teams.
