Because it is quite patently a cap circumvention move, and a brilliant one at that. By giving pronger a job, the NHL acknowledges that he never plays again, but if he retires Philly get hit with the cap hit (35+ contract). The Leafs let them tie their own hands, then slapped them in the face afterwards...

Gotta give credit to Clarkson's agent for getting that contract for him...I wonder how many other players he represents and how many GM's laughed at him for trying to put similar contracts together for said players

So, yeah, terrible contract, but I have a hunch that, given the state of UFA forwards that year, he would've signed an equally terrible contract somewhere else.

Nonis implied that when he was asked about it a few times; I would think he along with other GMs speak candidly about contracts and dollars as the market ramifications on decisions like that equally affect every GM out there.
