Wow the Clarkson trade. That blew me away when I sat down to watch the game last night.
I'm surprised that Bettman let this trade go through.

My theory (and I've said it before on this board) is that MLSE forced Nonis' hand on signing Clarkson to his ridiculous contract. They realized it was a bad idea and pretty much gave Shanahan / Nonis the green light to do whatever it takes to fix that mess.

Edit: it would also explain why Nonis is still on board. If he was forced to sign Clarkson, how could he take the fall for it?

It's not like that happens often enough for there to be a phrase perfectly describing it or anything...

Gotta give credit to Clarkson's agent for getting that contract for him...I wonder how many other players he represents and how many GM's laughed at him for trying to put similar contracts together for said players

Bettman gave the green light to deals like that by allowing the Flyers to let Pronger on LTIR while getting a job at the NHL player safety department.

One thing about this kind of deal that hurts the Leafs(barely) is that the cap hit for Horton is entirely on the books during the offseason, so it limits how much they can spend.

Actually, that's probably a good thing...

no cap in the off season.... allowed to go over by a certain amount (10% I think), so not really.

however, dont they get to exceed the cap by the amount of his salary since he is LTIR?

It gives them less flexibility.

This deal? Not a problem... But if they do more like it, it could make summers even more boring .
