Impossible, yes. Necessary, I don't really think so. It would absolutely be necessary if they were planning on competing within the next 5 years. I actually don't think Clarkson would have been the worst guy to have around during a rebuild. It's also no real loss getting rid of him. I just don't think it's a big deal.

Look at it this way, if Lupul and/or Bozak are gone at the deadline and Phanuef and Kessel are gone it the summer, we're closer to the floor than we are to the ceiling. I'm not saying lots of cap space isn't nice, obviously it is, but when you have a ton of it it's really not that big of a deal anymore. If Arizona sheds a bad contract is it a giant coup? Not really. It's nice to get it off the books but they aren't going to use that space anyway. I'm not trying to poop all over a good trade, I just don't think it's huge. If the Leafs were still a competitive team, or had any hope of being one, it would be enormous.

Well where do we really expect Toronto to be in spending for the next several years? Middle of the pack? Where are we capwise if they move Phaneuf and Kessel? I really don't think cap space is going to be scarce for the foreseeable future. Cap space is worth a lot when you don't have it. The Leafs should have plenty.

They got rid of a burden.... On the ice and on the cap. Big win. They get rid of a guy who didn't want to be here anymore and was able to do it without adding to the cap or taking a roster spot away. Big win.

The leafs now have room to take a bad contract to get more assets.

This is a big win. A big deal.

The return for Clarkson is Meh.

Leafs grab another 1st at the deadline (20-22) and realistically draft 5th. A successful draft for me would be:

5: Dylan Strome
20-22: Travis Konecny
26-30: Colin White
