David Clarkson is owed $27.5M in real dollars over the next five years. Nathan Horton is owed $26.1M.
thought it was Monopoly money this whole time... - MCharisma91
Well, Horton has a higher cap hit but it was more front loaded I guess.

I don't think a trade like this takes a capologist.... its pretty simple math... - jribout
No but someone knew that it was worth CBJ's while to take Clarkson to get out from under Horton's payments |

CBJ initiated trade proposal with TOR. They wanted to lose Horton's financial commitment for player who couldn't play. CBJ wanted Clarkson.

5.25 extra million cap space a year to make the team more competitive is nothing? Leafs make a tonne of money so who cares - GardinerExpress
AGREED! If there was no cap the Leafs would be the highest spending team in the NHL. Also the value of the Clarkson contract being removed from the books and revving up the whole rebuilding process into high gear is way more valuable to MLSE than 5 million. They spend so much more on TFC players and got little to nothing outta them after 1 year and still keep going after more. It's a moot point. |

The three trades made in the last 10 days haven't seemed to me like they are Nonis like moves. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think this is a coincidence. - mcleafs
This is similar to the first Franson trade, and if I remember correctly burke said nonis had been working on it. |

Remember how we got that new capologist this summer?
Think he had a say in this? - Feeling Glucky?
I think everybody had a say in a deal this big, including a board willing to spend $26.5 million for a player who will probably never play again, in exchange for $5.25 million in cap space for the next 5 years.

Here's my question now. With all the acquired draft picks and cap space do they continue the rebuild or try and take a short cut and use their cap space on ufa's. the core is awful and still in tact but after seeing this i truly believe we will have no issues moving Kessel and Phaneuf. I hope these guys stay the course and dont go half assed on this rebuild. |
