I agree with both but as these depth guys get picked off by contenders what's a GM to do? He is totally handcuffed... no assets... no cap space.

All while believing this team still needs some "pieces"

- stowerkraut

The reason we have no assets is because of deals like this - "depth deals" involving pending UFAs. We might need pieces, but we have nothing to trade really.

The deals for Doug Murray and Marcel Goc along with others have taken some amount of toll. People love Bergenheim. His cost was essentially the same as Goc's was.

So let me ask are you, are you ok with this team as is? No more moves?

That's why I feel PM's future rides on this game. How many times can they let a Niskanen, Orpik, PM, Erhoff walk with out re-tooling (not rebuilding). It's roster roll over. Especially when guys like Petry and freaking Sekera are going to return 1st round picks and A+ prospects.

No one is offering 1st rounders and a top prospect for a likely rental dman. They are getting late 1st rounders and maybe a decent prospect at most. And that is probably in cases where the team believes they have a good chance to resign the player.

Yea I agree, I like his style of play but the injury problems are enough for me to not want us to trade for him. It's a shame too because i think he could be a horse in the playoffs with skilled linemates.

Also P.Kane's season might have ended last night so the Hawks will be looking for a wing to help soften the blow. He might be their target.

No, this team is still flawed. That said, I recognize we have little to trade in the lines of picks (we only have a second this year in the top four rounds), prospects (we need to keep Kapanen, Jarry, Sundquist, Pouliot and Harrington IMO) and no one wants our mess (Sutter and Scuderi to a certain extent because he has played alot better this year). I don't want to see assets for the 2016 draft traded at this time.

Petry isn't worth a first and A+ prospects. He is a third round type of acquisition. Someone is going to overpay for Sekera, who isn't worth that either.

I don't like the acquisition of rentals for good assets. I don't mind a deal that involves a good young player with term at a good cap hit. I don't like trading away good assets for someone with a terrible cap hit for the next seven years that would put us in bigger cap trouble than we are (Jordan Staal).

While he is Mr. Glass, the leadership Lupul brings is unquestionable, as well as his work ethic.

I would've gladly taken that for Niskanen last year.

I know it's hindsight but they don't get any further in the playoff's last year without him. And the same may go for PM this year.

Wow totally made my day man, also I finally pulled the trigger and put in an application to be a blogger, who knows if they will even look at it; I said I would write for any team. Should be interesting.
- nbartley9

Nice! I hope you get your spot as a writer. Some teams are in need on this board. I hope you get the Jets or the Blues. Hard to find articles for them.

I think for that the leafs would have to eat salary for the remainder of the contract. If i'm any team and the leafs would eat 50%, lupul is a great piece.

I still think he'd look great in Colorado, they aren't a 'win now' team but have a great core and could use help on the wings. I think lupul has 3 / 4 years left???

he'd light it up along with sid or geno, just ask nonis to eat salary...he loves throwing away cash

So at what point do you go all-in to win? Look at the 08/09 team. You lost some players the next year (Scuderi, Satan, Sykora) that you could have traded for future assets. But you didn't, because you went all-in to try to win the Cup. You need to strike while the iron is hot. If you keep being afraid of losing players for nothing you will never give yourself the best chance to win.

There you go.. if basically winning Stanley Cups is your threshold, then keeping just about every pending UFA ever was probably a mistake.

You could say that every year. That's what happens when a team is a "buyer" every deadline. They run out of tradable assets.

Colorado should have traded Ray Bouque in 2000-2001. Can't believe they lost him for nothing the next year.

And really, the Penguins should have traded Mario Lemieux back in 2006, they were total sellers that year.

I agree with most of this which is why I think trading PM or Hoff is a good move. If contenders will over pay for Sekera I'd imagine they'd the same if not more for PM. Trading Nisky last year to CHI for a decent prospect and late 1st could've returned Teravienen and Hartman (their 30th pick). That's how you fix depth IMO.

Sure, you eat 50% of Lupul's salary and we'll send you Sutter. How's that sound?
