I wouldn't argue that at all. 2nd round picks are definitely valuable. I have no problem trading them if the return is right....and this one is very borderline for me. I would have given next years 2nd for Bergenheim (just as an example, disregarding cap space) - YouMeAndDupuis9
If winnick works out and resigns or pushes the team for a deep playoff run then it's a worthy gamble but if the bottom out, this deal will look very ugly come the off season
"The second-round pick, offers slightly better than a one-in-three chance of yielding an NHL player, with about a 10% chance of being a top-six forward or top-four defenceman"

Bergenheim was the guy I wanted all along. I thought Winnik would come at a cheaper price than this but I wanted him on our roster as well.
Tlusty I wasn't necessarily waitng for since we fixed our top 6 with Perron and the emergence of Comeau.
I'll say I do agree with one thing though...scoring has been the issue the past number of postseasons, I'm not sure we've addressed the scoring woes yet. Tlusty and Bergenheim, though costlier, would have helped in this area more.
Perron helps. Hornqvist is a wash. You don't want to count on Comeau. Not much offense being produced from the backend, especially considering they're mostly OFD.
Not to be a negative nelly, just hope this is the first domino and Sutter is moved and we get more scoring potential. - YouMeAndDupuis9
I believe Perron, Hornqvist and Comeau are harder to shut down in the playoffs than Neal, Jokinen, fill in the blank. They all go to the net and get their noses dirty. As far as the D I expected more offence from Erhoff and maybe despres. Just hope Pouliot stays up and gets more comfortable and his offence should come around
Horny wasn't a wash IMO. Neal never went to the net......that's why he didn't score much in the playoffs. - madmike71
Yea, on paper, you're right. Hornqvist hasn't scored much in the playoffs either. He's also never been on a line with Sidney Crosby before. Still stand by my overall point...
Paid more for winnik then tlusty went for. I'm a little uncomfortable with what we paid but I like winnik as a player. I'll say this for old man Rutherford he sees a player he likes he goes and gets him. - dbell646
I don't know that they have a home for Tlusty. They have enough in the top six to get by, actually a better top six than in recent years assuming everyone stays healthy.
Winnik is a major improvement over Sill, and he'll help the 4th line tremendously unless he bumps up to the 3rd line with Sutter and Bennett, which would improve that line from a defensive standpoint.

Absolutely. Much tougher up front. I liked Neal a lot, but the guy rarely got within 10 feet of the net.

It's tough because if they make a big Cup run, it's not going to be because of Winnik.
I still think Blueger will be a NHL player in the next few years. Right now, he is playing top line minutes on one of the best college hockey teams in the country. - cap1681
This is a guy that's not talked about nearly enough, IMO. And I agree with you. People knock college prospects, but the way I see it, Blueger is playing at almost the same level the Johnny Hockey was playing last season and he's not a midget like Johnny G so his prospects of translating I'd say are better.
He's kind of a scrawny kid though, so he's in danger of Suttering. He's also natural C, and I think that Sundqvist is a better candidate for 3C than he is. No reason he can't be a top 9 winger if he can play LW too and puts on some weight. Wouldn't hurt to add another guy with legit play making skills that can play C since we all know 87 and 71 aren't gonna be available every game of the season.
So just to clear this up for some people since some seem to be confused. Nobody wanted Sill. Toronto did not want Sill. He had to be included to make the Cap work even with Toronto retaining 50% of Winnik's. The Pens had around $450,000 in cap space. Even at 50% Winnik was $650,000. So Sill goes the other way to offset most of that $650,000. So now the Pens have around $350,000 in cap space. SO keep in mind any more trades have to be within $350,000 of even money. - PensFan1103
Penguins had over 700K in cap space. You're wrong.
Winnik at 650 and Sill is at 550, means 100K onto us.

True, but adding an NHL player to your lineup over a guy like Sill increases the odds. Everybody knew we had half a team last year. This year's team is far more complete. Good 3rd and 4th liners contribute too. Who'd ever thought Talbot would score those goals in game 7.
The way I see it we're flipping Sutter for assets either at the deadline or at the draft, so I'm not that worried about that 2nd, and I am certainly not worried about the 4th. Sill is on their side of the ledger.
Sekera and Tlusty for a 1st, 3rd, 6th and mediocre D prospect is a pretty good day.
Also, not something that would have happened under Rutherford. - BINGO!
How are you feeling? You've been posting on here since the beginning of the season that you were going to take one of our bluechip prospects and a high draft choice for Tlusty
Sorry. That was rude. Honestly I'd be happy with the haul. You got the right price for Sekera, and I think what you got for Tlusty was about right too.

Talbot was playing on the 2nd line that year haha but yes, I'm with you, Winnik himself is not going to be the reason they go deep, but a properly constructed roster with capable NHL players on all 4 lines is, and Winnik IS a piece of that.

JR definitely made from questionable to brutal moves for you guys, but he's been pretty solid since coming to the Pens. Not sure if that's because he has other guys behind the scenes (botterill and others) weighing in on the decisions. But, knock on wood, he's yet to make a terrible trade with the Pens. Cane's front office is definitely making some solid moves now, only if they didn't have to deal with that Semin contract.

I'm happy with it. All things considered, that's a decent haul.
