This time of year, teams covet draft picks and prospects. Simple fact is when we trade prospects/picks for rentals, we don't get anything back. Nothing is yielded. We have limited amount of assets to trade. Why is that? Because we trade them for third line rentals and slow defensemen from Sweden - also a rental. - Oneonta Penguin
Unless we win the cup. That is yielded if it all works out. |

I am going to enjoy the ride now, but man the cupboards are going to be bare pretty soon. 4 guys in the system who might make an impact on the Pens (Dumoulin, Harrington, Sundqvist, and Kapanen) and that is assuming all 4 pan out. 2 possibly 3 of those guys could be up with the team next year and then what? The Pens will have 1 prospect left that they can count on when they need young guys on ELCs. - PensFan1103
I'd put Rust and Wilson on that list. Not high end guys but usefull |

Another point that a lot of you seem to be missing is that Sutter is still on the team. I see a lot of comments that Winnik is so much better than Sutter so it is a good upgrade over scarecrow/blackhole. Who do you think Winnik will be playing with exactly? If Sutter is as bad as everyone says, don't you think that is going to have a negative affect on Winnik when he has to play with him? |

Trade Sutter either now or at the draft and get a pick back. I'm not worried. Was it too much, yes, but not ridiculous. |

You guys have pretty much said it all....
We paid a premium for the Leafs retaining salary. Otherwise a 3rd would have sufficed instead of a 2nd.
Still, always questionable to give up assets for guys that we could have signed in the offseason.
All that said, from a hockey perspective...I think Winnik does help us more than Tlusty...especially if he can play 3rd line C. I know he's played center but my gut tells me he's better at wing because that's where he plays mostly.
Sutter and Dumoulin for Petry, Pakarinen, and a 4th and call it a day. - YouMeAndDupuis9
I like that a lot but I think Edmonton might be overpaying here. |

Every play gets contested more in the postseason- which is exactly what the Blackhole sucks at- winning puck battles. Winnik is as productive, a much better possession player, and much more physical. And he costs a lot less. - jfkst1
yes, but winnik has played wing mostly, and I dont think we should slot him in as a 3C, at least not until he could prove himself at such a position
im sure sutter has better face off stats as well |

The good news is that the majority of the Penguins core is on the good side of 30. |

I just want to put this out there for people who are concerned it was too much to give up for Winnik. Remember having the Leafs retaining salary, the main asset in the trade being more than a year away (2016 2nd rounder), and taking Sill requires more payment than WPG did for Tlusty. Here is a list of 2nd round picks since 2004 for the Pens.... Needless to say, they need to get better at drafting, or 2nd round picks aren't as valuable as some people make them out to be:
2004 - #31 Johannes Salmonsson
2005 - #61 Michael Gergen
2006 - #32 Carl Sneep
2007 - #51 Keven Veilleux
2008 - none
2009 - #61 Philip Samuelsson
2010 - none
2011 - #54 Scott Harrington
2012 - #52 Theodor Blueger
2013 - #44 Tristan Jarry - mw630
Samuelsson was flipped for Klinkhammer and a pick, and by most accounts is going to make it to the NHL, so not a waste.
Harrington is one of the 4 only potential NHL skaters the Pens have in the system
Blueger, I don't expect anything, but others are somewhat high on
And Jarry still seems to be a high end goalie prospect.
So you didn't really help your case a whole lot. |

Nice pick up, maybe there is a plan to move sutter at the draft to regain some picks as teams will have more cap flexibility |

I don't know the specific stats here at all...but just from watching games, I didnt feel Sutter was all that great at faceoffs. Curious if anyone has faceoff stats between Sutter, Winnik, and Spaling.
Pending faceoff stats, we have plenty of options, and I wouldnt hesitate a moment to trade Sutter at this point

I was always against it, but now that we have Winnik and Spaling who can play C.. I'd be for a Jagr+ pick for Sutter deal.

I kinda think most of those picks will be replaced or upgraded if/when the Penguins lose early.
I'll be sad when Babcock stays in Detroit. |

Samuelsson was flipped for a fringe 3rd/4th liner that was a healthy scratch and a throw in on the Perron deal - not much value there. Jarry might pan out, might not - too early to tell. Harrington (and maybe Jarry) are the only real valuable piece(s) selected in the 2nd round since 2004. It's still not that much to give up. |

I think of him as the guy playing very effectively in Anaheim. He'll be good, or, as good as a line with Sutter at center will allow.
I've never heard that terminology, but if it knocks Adams out of the line up I'm happy. |

Haven't the Devils and Pens only made one, very minor trade since Lou took over? I think that's right.
That said, I can see the Sutter for Jagr trade happening now. I'm not high on the move, but it seems like it's lined up pretty well at this point. |

What that actually shows is that it takes about 4-6 years for a 2nd round pick to make an impact, if any, to the NHL roster. I am not worried about the 2020-21 -2022-23 Penguins right now. |
