The problem is that management isn't good at identifying what roster deficiencies there are. Which is why Sutter is the 3C at $3.3m/yr. And also why teams like Chicago always seem to have the right players for the postseason.

So Kane going on LTIR equates to 6.3mil in cap relief that they can use to buy say Vermette and Petry. Then when Kane comes off IR there is no penalty and they have til offseason to be cap compliant?

Did Sutter go to arbitration that year ?

He was signed right near the arbitration time, but oddly enough did not file for it despite behaving like he had.

I believe it is just a prorated amount for the games he is missing on LTIR.

EDIT: They have to remain cap compliant until the end of the season but there are no roster number requirements after the deadline and there's no salary cap in the postseason.

Quiet, banana heart.

Actually, I was right about the other two. The point was, this is Rutherford's first year as GM, so prematurely judging him or blaming him for roster construction that was (more or less) laid upon him by his predecessors seems a bit premature.

Was thinking the same exact thing. Losing Kane is terrible. But, since they are guarenteed to make the playoffs, it is pretty convenient if he goes out right at deadline time and can make it back for playoffs. A team like that up against the cap now can bring in basically anyone.

Of course, there's a chance Kane wont be back for playoffs, but right now, I'm a bit jealous.

I did not even read what you were debating before this, Mr Grapefruit.

They're only in the playoffs by 8 points in a tight Western Conference. They weren't playing altogether great hockey WITH Kane, and without him, it's possible they could fall. Maybe not out of the playoffs, but they may have to make it in as a wild card.

That it was the prior regime's choice to do things like never draft forwards with 1st round picks (in general) and make bad veteran signings like Scuderi.

Can't believe Rutherford gave Sutter such an awful contract, brought in a broken-down Scuderi, and refused to use a first round pick on a forward,

I know we are all obsessed with size, but with Botterill scouting in CBJ, how would you guys feel about Atkinson?

I guess anything is possible. But if this all works out as magical cap circumvention and they add a big name trade target, I will be mad lol.

If Sutter were involved in the trade I'd be all for it.

I've seen 6-10 weeks for Kane reported... Playoffs start in about 6 1/2 weeks. There is a chance that they could miss Kane the first round of the playoffs, or have a much less effective Kane in that round.

And right now, they'd face St Louis in the first round... Not a great team to go against with a bum shoulder, they will try to kill him.

I was over on a CHI post and it seems as if they're already in on Glencross, Vermette, Petry... all the "big" names.

Maybe Sid should get "hurt". Not like the concussion hurt but like the ASG "hurt"

Tongue in cheek, obviously

You have to have a team doctor deem you "medically unfit to play" to go on LTIR. Falsifying that could have severe penalties for violating the CBA.
