i don't think anyone is really criticizing the move, more taking a "wait and see" approach. none of us know anything about DSP. regardless of what QP tells you.

I like the size increase and if he brings the same effort then thats not a bad thing.

If Sekac never develops into more than we've seen(a scoring touch), then yes.
But Smith-Pelley was supposed to be what Gallagher wasn't supposed to be able to sustain. So maybe a change could allow him to at least get a little closer to initial potential? Otherwise, this is an odd move. Anyone know the salary exchange on this?

It is Sekac first year in the NHL. I would have been more patient. Anyway, could be a good trade, don't really know the other guy.

Smith-Pelly is about 40 pounds heavier

Maybe something to do with his attitude...

Think it's an effort to be less cute and more effective on the forecheck.

yeah could be. i also think Bergevin wants a more traditional fourth line for the playoffs, once that can score every 4 or 5 games. it's just a black hole right now with Bournival and Malhotra on it.
- DoubleDown

Malhotra is on the third line.

Smith-Pelly plays a similar game to Simmonds, he fits a huge need.
- QuebecPride

Like I said earlier, that was the evaluation a few years back but the numbers don't seem to back it up. Maybe Sekac wanted out or maybe Habs didn't see enough progression and think they can help DSP fulfill his potential. Who knows.

I agree with that. Looking at the stats, Pelly has some penalty kill time per game

True but we don't get to see work ethic and attitude so almost impossible for us to evaluate.

We cannot be down on that trade. Sekac showed some potential but obviously did not fit into Therrien's plans. Has needed to get tougher for the playoffs and they did. He scored 27 goals in 55 games in the AHL last year so we know he can score. Has have no player of that nature in the farm, but they do have skill coming up eventually. They could afford to sacrifice Sekac. Let's see how it turns out....for the Habs. I think Sekac will strive in Ana.

seems like Bergevin's line of thinking "guys who get you to the payoffs and guys who get you through the playoffs" shone through here.

That was my first thought. Maybe Sekac was not happy sitting games and being played on the 4th line and it showed in practices and meetings. He had a tremendous upside for offense, something the Habs clearly need desperately, but MT didn't seem fond of him; maybe DSP will surprise us all; but I seem Sekac being the bigger score 5 years down the road.
