What that deal gets you is the sound of laughter followed by a click, and then calls from the other 28 GMs laughing at you.

But that's the thing, Leafs have other assets they could move out to help the rebuild along if they don't get something they like for Kessel.

JVR alone could get more than what these guys think Kessel is worth.

There are very few players like Kessel in he league, and even fewer available for trade, locked down long-term. If the Leafs are moving him, it's on their terms, which puts them in a position of strength. Especially if the other team is somewhat desperate to look like a legitimate franchise.

to be honest, i don't think anyone really knows whether the leafs are in a position of strength or not.

as far as i can remember, since the salary cap has come into play, the only player traded who had a big money long term deal was luongo.....and he was basically given away for free.

nobody really knows what impact his contract will have on a trade. it's one thing to give that kind of money out on an extension or to an FA....it's entirely different to take that money on, while at the same time sending several valuable assets back in return.

IMO, it takes a lot of value away from the player (relatively speaking).......but in reality, nobody knows.

Dale did a super job signing him long term, he's not being traded.

Lol definitely leave it in that case. Enjoy your first round sweep, if you even make the playoffs.

If you want Kessel, start with:

Huberdeau
Trochek
1st 2015

Take it or leave it.

- cesareborgia

Your proposal actual makes sense ...Hurbereau for Kessel straight up?????thats a joke

Luongo wanted out, only wanted to go to Florida, and plays a lower value position(in terms of the trade market).

Not exactly a comparable. Carter and Richards are much better comparables.

no way you trade huberdeau for kessel straight up let alone a first and bergenheim. if huberdeau is included M.R. is coming back the other way... a fair trade would be kessel, Phaneuf and Reilly for huberdeau, kulikov and a 1st. id say thats a wash across the board and all the players get a change of scenery.

You really have to stay away from your own stash...that's for the crack heads!!now stop being under the influence ,get your head out if the clouds and smartin the (frank) up...Kessel is a top 5 scorer,,he is a great passer and very fast,he is not injury prone

It was risky, but looks good so far. Could well be the forward equivalent of the Josi contract

even they aren't good comparables, as their cap hits are around 3mil less than kessel's.

there really aren't any good comparables......that was kind of my point. nobody really knows the impact that his contract will have on his trade value.

personally (and it's just my opinion), i think it will be a relatively significant impact....unless the leafs are willing to eat some salary.

No, they're good comparables. Their cap hits were closer to Kessel's than the numbers indicate at face value, because they were signed when the cap was lower, and they never showed the season by season high end offensive ability Kessel has.

I think Kessel brings a 1st, top prospect and a roster player. Talent, skill and upside of said roster player is to be determined.

As for Carter and Richards I think they are comparable. Long term deals at hefty cap hits. We can't compare their cap hits to Kessels as it was done at a time of a different ceiling of cap.
