No I get it, but the Darcy comparison is out in left field and makes 0 sense.

Darcy got average players at the deadline, he never got a player of Sharps ilk over the summer from a cap strapped team

Sharp had 78 points last year, is it inconceivable he could get 50?

Also, if you as you say just don't get old players for a rebuild, what are Gionta, Gorges and Moulson here for ?

- sbroads24

Sharp was being said to be brought in instead of O'Reilly. O'Reilly would be a core member and you are arguing to bring in a 33 year old who will be 34 in Dec next year instead of him to be a core member for 2 years left on his contract because, like Darcy, you think O'Reilly would cost too much and it would be cheaper to "settle" for the 2 years left on Sharp's contract and what the aging forward could do. I think you have to lose some of the fear of the Sabres trading big instead of trading small. Trading and thinking small leads to one of the worst teams in NHL history, thank you very much Darcy.

Gionta, and Moulson, in my estimation, especially after this year, are not core members of the Sabres. Gionta was never expected to be, perhaps Moulson was, I don't know, I never wanted him but the Sabres had to get to the cap floor. The Sabres needed veteran experience on D so they got Gorges for one of their many 2nd round picks

So when are people "commenting" (quotes intended) online about articles ever going to learn the difference between a column and news story?

Mike Harrington ‏@BNHarrington 12m12 minutes ago
If you don't know the difference, you're not remotely qualified to comment, so you should zip it.

It amazes me that this guy talks like he is a top rated journalist, you work for the Buffalo News not CNN . Quit being a total douche every single day !!

- metzeric

Harrington doesn't even qualify to be a columnist. Maybe he should zip it. No credibility just like those other (frank)ing buffoons over at the socialist Buffalo Snooze.

I never said Sharp would be a core player, I said stop gap....3 times now. That's also my point, one guy you are giving up major assets because he's potentially a core player, the other you aren't.

Lots of rebuilding teams go after cash strapped teams and it works.

Johnny Boychuk
Nick Leddy

Those two are prime examples of buying low from cash strapped teams

Sounds like you guys are arguing about timing.

If Sharp is a "stop gap" that makes it sound like you're not intending to be really good til after sharp is gone. I can understand why it might help to season the youngins a bit more, but I also understand the desire to get top level guys who might pull the others up by their bootstraps NOW (meaning after this draft).

Sharp has 2 years left, I expect if we get McDavid we are competing by his 2nd year.

We would have Kane at 24/25 McDavid at 19/20 and Reinhart at 21 by mid season. Also Girgs and Ennis in their primes.

IMO instead of trading assets like McCabe or Grigo, let them get some NHL time around other talent like Kane/Sharp/McDavid and see what we got

More time Greater risk there - waiting to see how/if prospects develop - as opposed to using them to acquire known commodities now.

The Sabres, reportedly, do not want to take as long to rebuild as we thought. O'Reilly is a unique player and he will not be available again so you have to get while the getting's good. I have just grown so sick of bandaid type answers through the years and want solid foundations.

I believe in giving up quantity for quality if that's what it takes to build a winner because I have seen far too many teams of multitudes of 3rd and 4th liners, and even 1st and 2nd line tweeners but too few solid, legit 1st and 2nd liners. Players you win with.

Not that it really matters to me but I wonder if there is an entirely different plan for whether they get McDavid or Eichel. I mean is there a trade Murray will make only if he has McDavid or is there a big trade he makes because he got Eichel instead of McDavid.

So does Murray. He's said several times that he's going to take the large amount of assets he's been given and package them up for better players.

Problem with that logic is you are assuming the quantity can't become quality.

What if Boston moved Bergeron because he was just a 2nd rounder or Nashville moved Shea Weber. Some of these prospects are going to be better and some are going to be worse than currently advertised.

Ryan O'Reilly isn't a once in a lifetime player, he isn't worth what his GM is asking for, especially without a contract

I think Bill Polian followed this philosophy as well. Cornelius Bennett trade comes to mind. Greg Bell, two 1sts (14th, 26th) and a 2nd.

Impressed Gil! Not bad my man! Loved that 3 way trade, I'll never forget Bennett's 1st game against Denver!! Deals like that make you better (ie - Kane/Bogo).

There was a lot more to that Bennett deal though.

Eric D!ckerson went to Indy in that deal. It took 3 teams to get that one done.

Sometimes I think you are Darcy on here "what if"

And TM doesn't blow his load on this deal if he isn't pretty sure he can sign him. TM is tight with O'Reilly's agent. If he does give up a lot and not sign him then he is on the hot seat.

With out the Rams the deal doesn't get done though.

And for all the draft picks LA got, they didn't turn out to anything spectacular.

How about we just stick to facts instead of what if's.

Kane has attitude issues- fact
Bogosian has performance issues - fact
O'Reilly has contract issues and isn't having a stellar year - fact

Yet these guys are somehow known "Quality" players, again for the 1000th time, we aren't talking about Rick Nash ' s or Taylor Halls, we are talking about a bunch of "What if" players
