Do you see them being competitive any time soon just by flipping off their junk for second round picks and drafting well?

Florida is coming.

Buffalo is stocking up on great young players, and will either get McDavid or the consolation prize in Eichel.

The Pens aren't going anywhere.

The Isles are hear to stay.

The Rangers are built to be very competitive for the next several years.

The Lighting are stacked.

The Red Wings are as well.

The Habs are a top team and show no signs of going away.

*******

The Devils are terrible. They suck upfront big time. Their defensive core is o.k., but not great.

They will not be truly competitive at any time during Schneider's contract, just by drafting in the Top 10 every year. To the contrary, what is likely to happen is that by those picks that they are going to make in the next few years, will only start paying dividends once Schneider's contract is approaching completion. So, why not use him as a shot of rebuild adrenaline?

Honestly, there is not a team in the NHL that I would like to be less than the Devils right now.

Buffalo is going to suck for sometime.

Other than that, I agree with your assessment. Listen, I am not rooting for Jersey to be good anytime soon. I would love to see them suck for at least another decade.

Arizona is in rough shape too. While they have a couple quality prospects, they have no money to throw at free agents. The Devils at least have money.

Arizona of course has some attractive rental pieces in Vermette and Michalek this year, and Yandle next year.

- rangerdanger94

Arizona has OEL and Domi. They are better but not by much.

that Samuelsson kid is pretty good too, right?

OEL is a stud obviously, but the Devils have Larson and Severson who are kind of comparable.

Both teams are in miserable shape.

They will, but they also have McDavid (or Eichel) Risto, Zadarov, Reinhardt, Kane, Bogo, etc. As much as I hate to say it, and as much as I think the deal they made with the Jets was a bad one, I really like that team's prospect base.

Edit: Also, just calling it like I see it with the Devils. I hate the Islanders, but I think they are going to be great for the next decade. The Pens are always going to be good with Crosby and Malkin (i.e., they will always be in the hunt). I just think the Devils are in miserable shape right now).

No goaltending prospect though is a major hole.

I like it when Daniel Bryan does it. When a professional sports franchise does it I find it on the level of an AHL team. So, you do the math. hated it when the SF Giants did it this past year as well. Bush league. So you guys keep it up. I LOVE it!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed about Jersey though; no need to defend your stance. There is copious amounts of proof to suggest that they will continue to suck for many years.

Buffalo has a nice prospect base for sure but there defense needs work and who is their goaltender during this transitional time, Neuvirth?

Luongo has one the worst contracts in the league.

Miller was a rental.

I hardly think those are good examples.

But, may the problem is with the term king's ransome. They will get a very healthy return. What do you think a team like Edmonton would give up for him?

- Pete V

I agree with your points on Luongo and Miller, but they are the only All-Star goalies traded in my recent memory. I think the trend is for teams to take a chance on an up and coming goalie at a much cheaper cost than splurging assets for a positional upgrade.
http://www.thehockeynews....expect-to-hit-a-home-run/

That being said, for Edmonton its tough as they are in similar places for rebuild. I dont think Edmonton wants to give up much, regardless of the upgrade. I would imagine they would have to give up one of Hall, Hopkins, Eberle, Yak, plus a first, and some players to get Schneider. That would likely put Edmonton in the same place the Devils are now

The Sabres overpaid, but they're the only team in the league that COULD overpay and have it not really hurt them. With McDavid/Eichel on their top line next year, they'll have a decent looking top 6 that could actually be kind of scary in two years.

Schneider!

- Pete V

I actually think the Sabres can end their rebuild quickly Flames style if things fall into place and they're aggressive. I look at Dallas, a team that looked like it was going nowhere, who makes 2 blockbuster moves in acquiring Seguin and Spezza and now they're a respectable team. Buffalo made one bold move in acquiring Kane and have the assets to make another.

What if buffalo signs niemi as a free agent and then acquires a guy like Yandle through a trade? All of a sudden, they have a good mix of youth and veterans and could surprise.

Larsson and Severson a re good, but I think Mcodnagh and OEL are comparable. Both are a notch above. They have both of Ulf's kids. Henrik is supposed to be kinda like Hanzal.

McEichel are talented players but they're just kids. If buffalo relies on Reinhart and McEichel to be top 6 players at any point in their first 3 or 4 years in the league, they will fail Edmonton style.

Agreed. OEL could be considered a top 10 defenseman in this league.

I know one of the Samuelsson kids is tearing up the CHL offensively, not sure which one though. But yea, that team is screwed for a while. They can acquire a ton of 1st and 2nd rounders by moving Michalek, Vermette, Yandle, and Hanzal this deadline and next deadline at least. The Devils best rental piece is Jagr who I think has lost a lot of value.

I haven't seen Eichel play much, so I can't speak on him. But, McDavid will be an elite player in the league by Year 2, IMO. I won't take 3-4 years with him.

Seriously, name me a team that is in worst shape to contend over the next 6-7 years?
- Pete V

The Devils drafts over the last ten years have absolutely sucked with few exceptions like Henrique and a defenseman or two. The jury is still out on #4 overall Larsson.

They also have an severe attendance problem in their "new" arena in Newark that is so hard for many Jerseyans to get to. There is no where to go pre-game or post game outside of the near game time police presence.

It is not to far fetched to think if they are still having financial problems with a terrible bottom of conference team in 3 or 4 years they might be pushing for better pastures. They are lucky the Flyers, Islanders and Rangers fans fill the building for them otherwise they would be in even more dire consequences.

They have been 5th or 6th from the bottom of the league in attendance for most of the last 15 years only breaking out of the 20th or lower spot but once in the last 15 years. Most of the time they are 24th or 25th in the league attendance wise. The myth that attendance would soar once they were out of the Meadowlands has never been realized.

It has been time for Lou to go for a while now....

Yeah I don't get that either. Rangers continually get the MSG shaft.
