You know there is going to be that GM that is stupid enough to pay that price. I mean, Rutherford really want Winnik, and he's already shown he'll trade a decent bottom 6 center for someone who is lucky he's still playing in the NHL because GRIT. - L_B_R
Maybe.
But its still mainly a buyer's market. 8 or 9 teams already pretty much out of the playoffs now, a lot of unwanted junk with little value on those teams. |

BUF, EDM, ARI, TOR, and CAR are the only for sure teams selling off their pieces. OTT is highly likely, though (and they should be). I mean, the FO's of COL and PHI and CBJ all still seem to think they have a shot at making the playoffs. As of like a week ago, Lamoriello thought NDJ were still in it ffs. None of them are, obviously, especially in the east, but the delusions of some of these teams is going to push some of the trades pretty up to the wire. And the market for good value pending UFA is not that big even factoring in all those teams - especially for centers and defensemen.
For the record, I don't think TOR will get that price, but I think they'll wait long enough that teams like PIT, WPG, or ANA will give them something close to it. |

Just wanted to weigh in on revisiting the chance to trade for Jeff Carter. Aside from giving up Saad, what else would we have given up, out of curiosity? The Kings gave up Jack Johnson and their first round pick in 2012 or 2013, we know. It's really hard to know where the Hawks stood without more info on who Columbus would have wanted. The Kings gave up a big contract. What assets would the Hawks have given up, given that getting Carter would have pushed them into cap purgatory again without significant salary in return?
We also know that the Flyer clubhouse was in complete turmoil around the time that Holmgren dealt Richards and Carter. I have a friend who is a huge Flyer fan, and he told me some crazy stuff about what was allegedly going on, though it's hard to know what's true and what isn't from behind my keyboard here. Both players were in a state of shock after that trade, I remember. Carter languished in Columbus, and dealt with injuries while he was there.
When Carter went to LA, it was Philly West. Reunited with Richards and Gagne, as well as his old coach, John Stevens, a King assistant at that point. It's hard to think that Carter shines like that anywhere else. It's easy to say the Kings won two Cups after getting Carter, so how does everyone else look now? The Hawks probably would not have won in 2012 even with Carter on the roster. They won in 2013. Carter gave the Kings the edge in 2014, but still, who would the Hawks have given up? Would Carter have gotten past all the Flyer baggage as quickly here?
Anyway, unless there is some other bombshell piece of info, I am not convinced that Carter would have made the same difference here that he did in LA over the last three years. |

The hell with Jeff Carter. Why didn't he trade for Jamie Benn?

Agreed.
No all world beaters out there.
I think the Preds are smoke and mirrors. WOuld love for the Blues to catch them and have the Hawks destroy the Preds in the 1st round - mrpaulish
Well the Nashville Smoke and Mirrors smoked the sharks tonight 5-1 and 15-3-3 since Jan 1. And have won 6 in a row only giving up 9 goals.
These guys are the real deal...minimal playoff experience? Yep! No real studs on the forward line? Yep! But all they do is win! |
