Sadly, what's best for the team is to get a good return for him to build towards the future.
What's bets for him may be to end his career as a Flyer. He may value that over a Cup. - jmatchett383
Part A is where I am at. Get him back. Get him moving. Get him out of here.
Part B I can't see being in his mind. He is one of the fiercest competitors I have ever watched. He never quits. Never misses a chance to play. I think he wants one last crack at it. If that is the case, he will be moved.

He never quits is right. That's why I can't see him "bailing" on the Flyers. Also, he has a home here, and I can't see him pulling up his roots for a 3-month spell somewhere else.

Flyers schedule before the deadline: Blue Jackets, Sabres, Predators, Capitals, Hurricanes, Leafs, and Rangers
Bruins schedule before the deadline: Oilers, Blues, Blackhawks, Canucks, Devils, Coyotes
The Bruins will probably get at least 6 pts since the Oilers, Devils, and Coyotes are beyond putrid but the other 3 games are tough ones. The flyers on the other hand only have 2 tough games against the Rangers and Predator. If they can't close to 4 pts on less by the deadline, they need to sell. - psuhockey
Since the Panthers are ahead of the Flyers you have to take a look at them too:

maybe he gets traded to a contender for a shot at the cup and then signs a 1 day deal next year w/ the flyers and retires here....

I dont think he would be pulling up his roots. He would likely be taking a 2-3 month leave from home. Hell, half the time they are out on the road anyway. Not that big of a deal.
If he really wants a true shot at a cup... he will leave.

reminds me of forsberg's situation when he was here where he accepted a trade to nsh in order to help the flyers get better

Yes and no..
This to me is more Ray Bourque. He is retiring after this season. He likely wont get a shot with the Flyers. Go elsewhere and get that chance. Also gives the Flyers something for his expiring contract.
EDIT:Forgot Bourque played the following season in COL as well.

i just meant in terms of player attitude toward the idea.....at that time it seemed forsberg accepted the trade because he knew it would be helping the flyers.
it might be that timonen would do the same
Not at all. I just hate it when people treat things that they don't know for sure as fact and refuse to allow for any other outcome. When Timonen comes out and says, "I want to be traded to a contender as opposed to spending the remainder of my career in the city that I've called home," then I'll agree they should move him as it's what he wants. Until that day comes, I'm not gonna say for sure it is or is not.
I doubt Timonen stays in Philly after retirement as opposed to going home to Finland (isn't that where he spends his summers?), and if that's the case, I don't think he would mind being traded out of the region if the right deal came along.

If Timonen wants the chance to win the Cup in his 16th NHL season, he may ask for a trade and the Flyers would surely oblige. The question is: What could the Flyers get for him?
If he goes to a team like the Nashville Predators (where he started his career) or the San Jose Sharks, they'd probably need to see something in game action to give up a draft pick, something GM Ron Hextall would like to add in advance of what's supposed to be a deep draft.
Timonen isn't rushing back just to show potential suitors that he still has enough in the tank to carry them over the hump.
"Not right now, no," Timonen said. "I just...It's three weeks away, that trade deadline. Once I get into team practices and that kind of stuff, I'm sure we're gonna see how I feel and go from there. I haven't thought about that far."
He admits he has talked with his wife, Johanna, and his three children about the potential of him living away from Haddonfield for a few months starting in March. Leaving his family back in South Jersey would be tough.
"It will be," Timonen said. "... If that happens, to anybody if you leave your family behind it's gonna be tough."

My gut feeling tells me that he will ride it out in Philly and that the org will allow him to do so. I doubt whether or not a contender will fork over a 2nd or 3rd pick for a guy whose had major health problems and won't be in full game shape until after the deadline if at all. Big risk, and no sense sending him off for a 6th rounder.. I think he rides it out.
I wonder if he comes back and feels great, does he consider 1 more year? Doubt it, but it could happen.

His family and kids are settled and schooled here. He is here to stay...

who did that? what i was saying is that if he gets traded it might be his way of trying to help the team by getting assets in return.
