The problem is that Kessel isn't Toews or Kane but he is paid like them. As the hosts on 590 pointed out, you bring in a Kessel as the last piece. But you can't pay the last piece 8 mill a year. The Hawks don't pay Hossa or Sharp that money and that is part of the reason it works.
- Slump Buster

Um??? 7.9 million is Hossa's salary and they are screwed when he retires because of the way the contract is built

The Only reason Hossa is not making 8MM dollars is because Chicago got that contract signed before the Lockout.

Chicago is effed with a recapture penalty when he retires.

Sharp is 34 years old. Kessel 27.

And you don't have to pay your Kane and Toews (McEichel and Reinhart) for 3 more years so you have plenty of time to figure it out...

I gave up arguing the point. I was listening to 590 on the way home and even the hosts were saying that he the Leafs will probably have to hold salary to trade him at all. They had an excellent point - people overpay guys because they believe someone else will pay hom that money. There is no way he is an 8 mill a year player and no way Phaneuf is a 7 mill player. You can't build your team that way.
- Slump Buster

Any team would have the Leafs over a barrel for either Kessel or Dion with those bad contracts, let alone that bum Clarkson.

Phaneuf is not a 7 million player but Kessel is absolutely an 8 million player.

I posted stats to back it up comparing him to Kane who is about to be a 10.5 million a year player...

Is Kessel as dynamic as Kane? No but he is a better skater and is a PPG player. Certainly worth the contract

- Stripes77

The proof is in the pudding. Why aren't teams lining up for him? I'd take him any day of the week. The contract is a killer in both the short and long term. Ovi and PKane are the only wingers in the league worth that money (unless I am missing someone).

The only reason he isn't making 8 mill a year is because they weren't foolish enough to pay him 8 a year.

Fun fact Kessel has 9 more points in 9 more games played than Ovi over the last 4 years...

12 year deal worth 62 Million dollars. Front loaded. If they had to conform to the new rules He gets 8MM a year.

Over 8 years that is a $7.75MM cap hit. Which is slightly less than Phil, because he is slightly less valuable then Phil.

But facts, who likes those.

None of that means anything, in the position this team is in, you don't start trading away everyone for a guy that has 7 yrs left on a contract making 8 mill a yr. People love Murray now but will hunt him down in 3 years when we suck again becaue the kids want raises and we can't do it.

Who said trading away everyone?

The Sabres have plenty of more assets to move to make it happen without tearing the team apart. They just did it with Kane.

Also look at what Chicago was able to do with having to move guys and building it back up...2 Cups in 5 years

Christ and people were screaming at me when I mentioned Richards or when Murray made a deal for Kane. He gave up a guy who wansn't going to sign here and another that he didn't have any planes for and people are freaking out. Now you want to trade another 1st round pick, plus another young player or 2 and a roster player for Kessel ?

we will be back to square one if they take on Kessel in 3 years time, back to complaining of being stuck again.

If they had to conform to the new rules he would get 8? That's the freaking point! Hossa's cap hit is 5.25 million. You're right, he is slightly less valuable than Phil but appropriately paid. He wouldn't get Kessel cap hit because they aren't as dumb as the Leafs.

I will stand by this next statement:

If we win 1 Cup and have to tear it all down right after like the Marlins did when they won the Series so freaking be it...

McDavid at that point will command top dollar...

Girgensons will be around 5-6 depending on where the cap ends up

Risto will be the same as Girgensons unless he steps up BIG time

Gionta will be gone

Reinhart wont command top dollar

Gorges will be gone

You make it seem like its not doable...

I don't know why so many people want Kessel. Sure he can score, but brings absolutely nothing else to the table. He makes too much for being a -19 +/- player. I know the Leafs are not good, but when you have 5 forwards that are on the + side (all with less points) it shows Kessel is on the ice for a lot more goals against than what he produces.

Um
Before this year we had 0 top 5 picks on this team.

Kane - Top 5 pick
Bogosian - Top 5 pick
Reinhart - 2nd overall
McEichel - Top 2
Kessel - Top 5 pick

5 top 5 picks on this team in one year.

This is nothing like where we have bene before.

Because +/- is totally an indiviual stat. Not the crap Toronto team he plays on....
