I just don't get why people think these guys, who are on their last legs of their careers, should take considerably lower salaries.

It's like the people who said Pronger should retire because, "He's only making another $7 million for the next 3 years, he doesn't need it." Needing it and preferring to make it are 2 different things.

- jmatchett383

Curious questions: Pronger is still drawing on his NHL contract correct? Is he also getting a NHL salary for his new role?

The flyers wouldn't let him retire
- Blackstrom2

The Flyers have no say in the matter. If he wants to retire, he can retire. But it would be to their detriment if he did.

I'm as anti-Sutter as they come, and even I think that would be a terrible move. It just exacerbates the problem with Sutter; overpayment to an ineffective player. Hodgeson is signed for much longer and is a slightly higher cap hit.

I love this board, and all the Pens chat assosicated with it, but sometimes the deals proposed on here are mind boggling and make you wonder if people even follow the rest of the league or just go by player ratings of the EA sports games. Just as most fan bases over value thier players, when a fan base gets down on a player they can under value you them too. I belive Sutter + can still get us a decent return, much better than a guy who is a buy out canidate on one of the worst teams in the league.

I don't know how that works. Since he's only on an "advisory panel" he may be doing it of his own free will.

If Pronger says, "I'm going to retire," please tell me how the Flyers stop him from doing so.

Same with Marc Savard and the Bruins.

Even switching Winnik for Beau on the 3rd line might not be enough. Spaling shows some grit but Sutter is overpowered over and over (and usually by small players). The 3rd line should be a shut down line. Unless their plan is to play a rope a dope style and have the opposition tire themselves out in Pitts offensive zone somethings gotta give

I'm using my brain and making a rather easy pragmatic conclusion. Are you going to continue to argue about nothing?

Oh, greed and money is king, no doubt. But roughly... 1 out of 10 players will take not near top value at the end of their careers, or on a 1 year type of deal for a better chance to win if they really want to win.

So, its just a lot of wishful thinking.

Perron sid horn
Tlusty geno comeau
Kuni winnik bennett
Spaling lap downie

If pens get jagr:
Perron sid horn
Comeau geno jagr
kuni winnik bennett
Spaling lap downie
Adams

Either way I'm good with, either way sutter is gone and winnik is here lol

- nh4442

He mostly played the right side before the injury. But even then he'd come down the left side when in offensive zone

People just want him gone. As I do. I would love if a "connected" writer would offer some insight on Sutter's value because I honestly don't know. After a very good playoffs and a nice start to the season, he's be f'n terrible. So how do you value that player?

FWIW.... Rossi said Sutter is available. Same with Beau.

So....he should want to make LESS money on his final contracts???
- jmatchett383

Next year will be his last, I would rather win another Cup and cement myself as one of the best instead of dying alive in EDM/NJ for another million dollars or so.

I know this board is down on Sutter's play of of late, but come on, Sutter + for Hodgeson!!??!! Talk on TSN the other day was Hodgeson is a buy-uot canidate this summer. Hodgeson is of the same mold as Sutter, soft and over rated...but even more so. I personally want no part of him, he's pretty well a bust at this point in his career. Maybe a flyer on Robbie Schremp while we are at it? He showed some skill in juniour... LOL
- Willaged

Never said Sutter +. Just Sutter. Don't take it personally just throwing out there.

Was Perron a bust up until a month ago? I think Hodgson has a ton of skill and potential, way more than sutter ever had/will. Would love to see if he could raise Bennett's game or vice versa.

So, if your boss offered you an extra, say $500, you'd turn it down because you can live without it?
- jmatchett383

No. I don't have 120 million +

Ok if pens go after winnik hopefully it's something like harrington or dumo... if sutter martin or ehrhoff is sent I hope it's for picks... pens need some depth and they don't have a a 1st or 3rd... need to stock the cupboards. I know kap and sund will be atleast be in wbs next yr that will help but still..

You want your 3rd line center to be a good 2 way guy and that's not Hodgson. He does have skill but he also has a bad deal at this moment. Sabres can keep him

The Sutter for Winnik and Santorelli deal seems reasonable... younger guy with a year left on his deal (Sutter) for 2 UFA's that add to what we are putting together.... if you are going Sutter plus, I'd say a younger center with some term left... Sutter+ Doumalin for say Eric Haula, Riley Sheahan type guy.

I dont see a need for Jagr anymore. Penguins top 6 should be set in stone for the rest of the year.

Kunitz-Crosby-Perron
Comeau-Malkin-Hornqvist

Because of this, I dont see a need for Jagr. I do see a huge need for Winnik. Winnik would be the ideal type of guy we need for the bottom 6

I wouldnt trade Sutter or Bennett unless it's for a similar longer term guy and not a rental. Both have been awful. No better way to say it. Its not just about the lack of goal scoring, neither win puck battles. Neither do the things you need to do to win.

Does anyone think VAN would entertain a Kassian for Bennett swap. Kassian has actually played much better since he was a healthy scratch for a few games so that cow might have left the barn but I think Kassian would be a good idea but I doubt VAN does it at this point.

Someone did suggest Sutter +, and no Perron was not a bust, he was an established NHL player having a bad season on a bad team.. Hodgeson has never established himself..he's all hype, and the hype is wearing off. He'll be lucky to be in the league in 2 seasons.

Agreed that the defensive portion would suffer. But the offensive could benefit. All depends on the identity they're trying to build for the playoffs. Again, just throwing something different out there....

We can go back to the Jagr and Winnik talk for the 40th day in a row now.

Yeah the additional top 6 idea should be shelved. There was such a drop off after 71's line to Sutters and the 4th. MAF played pretty well last night, Wings were never out of it.

Maybe to Nonis. I'd finalize that deal before Shanahan had time to take the phone away. It would be a steal.

That's a good top 6 but what if 1 of them goes down. Do you want to try Spaling on the top 6 again....I've seen that movie before and it's got a bad ending
