When have we ever had a late rounder play any sort of important role? and if you want me to go back to my lifetime, oh buddy, where do i begin?
i remember the jeff wares, brandon converys, Thorontons, pearsons, etc. That's ancient history but it all trickles down the organization (those players could have generated assets,etc)..
Let me flip it around on you...when have we drafted a good player besides Rielly? before you answer, let's just take the last 7 years and where we finished (scrap the seguin/hamilton picks). we were a top 10 team every year but the shortened season...i see nothing that reflects positive scouting - clark_griswold
Kadri is right on track with where he was picked, Schenn didn't work out, but got us a top line winger, Percy looks like a good pick- as do Rielly and Finn. Brown is tearing it up as an AHL rookie, Leivo looks good as well. Nylander lit it up overseas, and is doing well in the AHL, Johnson has been rocking the SEL.
As for late round picks that have made it, Gunner, Reimer, Komarov, Stalberg, Stralman, etc were all drafted late and are undeniably NHL calibre players... Don't know how many of them were in the last 7 years though.
You've also got Holzer and Granberg who were taken late and look like locks to be Nhlers, even if they're not going to be gamebreakers.
Drafting hasn't been the problem. Keeping them has. |

Kaberle ring a bell?
Stralman's a beauty now, but couldn't keep him.
Gunnarson is top 4 on one of the best D teams in the league
Ponikarovsky was pretty good for a 4th round pick.
Freddy Modin
not much point going back further than that.
as for the higher picks?
I dunno, Tukka Rask seems decent
Jimmy Hayes is turning into a player.
little early for the last 3 drafts, but there are decent players there. Loov may end up being a real beauty too. - Badge
you went back 20 years. and that's it?

Bad contracts, and maybe a lack of picks more than anything... |

Last year I broke the Pinizzotto trade and the Kozun trade. I am surprised you guys don't remember me telling you I told you so. I have some secret friends in the NHL. - woopstash
Ok, you were looking for attention, you got some. Why don't you go see what the Buffalo guys are doing. |

compare this to the average other NHl team. sorry, it's bad. last 3 drafts are obviously excluded

7th overall is fine...but seriously...no one in years outside the first round is very, very sad. - clark_griswold
08-10 drafts were brutal.
scouting staff was all changed. Last 3 drafts have quite a lot of quality depth players in later rounds... just all going to take time to see who's for real.
no Elite talent outside of Rielly and Nylander, unless somebody surprised, but plenty of 2nd-3rd line potential and 3-6 dmen |

and historically we would agree.
most of us have been saying the last 3 drafts have actually been quite good for Leafs in terms of depth.
need to get more elite prospects for sure, but it isn't all garbage. |

The star had an article the other day that measured the amount of players each team drafted, leafs were avg. grant that's not great, but not as bad as some try to make it out.
Biggest issue is not having picks to make. |

It's not bad at all when you take into consideration how few picks the Leafs have had to work with.
And that's the problem. |

The Leafs have always had a hard on for other teams prospects and 1st rounders, rather then focusing on developing their own identity and culture... |

Or trade the other 14 guys I mentioned, keep our picks, and make sure our young players aren't left out to dry when they reach the NHL. |
